How long is a piece of string?
I'm afraid it's a bit variable, there isn't a good answer. However the numbers of depth charges in SH3 is hopelessly OTT. Mind you, the rate at which escorts turn and re-attack and the short time without a contact before they give up is even more silly. I guess it was done for more exciting game play. Not much point changing it without upgrading the escort AI to compensate.
The real life number of charges seemed to vary from ship to ship and year to year. Given that, Wikipedia is as good a source as any. Many British fleet destroyers started out with only around 10 charges total, but various modifications could take this up to 60+ as the war progressed. They paid for this by deleting armament, typically torpedo tubes and Y turret (at the rear). Purpose built escorts might carry somewhere around 100 charges (total). Towards the end of the war additional charges would sometimes be carried by a merchantman with the convoy - so effectively infinite ammo if the weather was calm! |

If you go to data/Library/DC_R_KG.sim and open the file with S3D you will find that 40 is the amount of DC ammo storage for each escort located in the wpn_DC Rack files as I understand it.
Keep in mind that even though they can expend the whole amount of DC's, once you save the game, and then reopen the save, the escorts will have the 40 DC's back in storage.

Is it 40 charges per rack/projector or 40 charges per escort? 40 charges per escort would be about right for a flower class corvette or mid-war destroyer.
My own experience playing the game suggests it is 40 charges per rack, which would explain how the Fletcher class destroyers in particular can launch huge spreads of charges many times. Anyone know the right answer? As I said in my earlier post I'm afraid using historical numbers would screw up the game balance unless the escort AI was made a lot smarter. Furthermore real sub hunts would take hours, which is more time than most people are willing to spend in a game playing session. |

There is a few ASW mods out there that include historical load outs for DC's. It seems that it is a lot more DC's, especially if you are on the receiving end.

A few figures for various Royal Navy Ships:
HMS Skate (the last WWI "R" Class DD and the only one to serve in WWII) - 83 DC's by November 1941 - reduced from 112 earlier "H" Class Destroyers: 110 DC's by February 1940 "A" and "B" Class Destroyers: 70 DC's April 1943 "D" Class Destroyers: 20 DC's before the war; 98 DC's April 1943 "F" Class Destroyers: 70 DC's April 1943 "G" Class Destroyers: Up to 107 DC's with 3 inch gun removed to save weight Wickes Class Ex-USA "Four Stackers": only 50-60 DC's (due to stability & topweight problems).
