Good and bad: engine is fine, stuff running on it a little glitchy. Rather glad the stability is there, means it won't crash every few minutes. I can stomach AI freaking out now and then, but booting back into a game every 10 minutes, not so much.

From PC gamer review:
Quote:
We got a review copy of Skyrim the day the game was officially finished, but it's curiously buggy. Among a lot of minor problems such as issues reassigning controls, there's glitchy character behaviour that can break quests, and AI flipouts that can turn a whole town against you. And the interface isn't well adapted to PC: it sometimes ignores the position of your cursor in menus. There's an update due as soon as the game's out, but there's a hell of a lot to patch here. Next time, maybe don't commit to a specific release day just because it has a lot of elevens in it?

These aren't engine issues, though. Skyrim is based on tech Bethesda built specially for it, rather than the middleware engine used by Oblivion and Fallout 3. It's a lean, swift, beautiful thing. New lighting techniques and a fluffy sort of frozen fog give the world a cold sparkle, and the previously puffy faces are sharp, mean and defined. Even load times are excitingly quick. On maximum settings, it runs at 30-40 frames per second on a PC that runs Oblivion at 50-60 - a decent trade off for the increase in scenery porn.

I was a little concerned about the PC interface as it seems they devoted all their attention on building it on 360, for 360... and less time maxing out its PC functionality.

There's a day-1 patch that may fix plenty of issues, I'm betting it will actually. If not, I might actually give the 360 pad a whirll untill they do.

I'm going to have to walk down to my local game store and see if they have it/will have it available tomorrow. They really need to fix their website...

Steam unlocking game now. day one patch is 18mb. And steam download is slow.

Usually I have to wait an extra day to get games unlocked, but this time New Zealand will be the first to play skyrim.

I prefer mouse and keyboard over the game pad.. but anyways over at Gamespot they are playing a marathon all day... on both consoles and PC, and so far the PC version has crashed 3 times.

I prefer it as well, just saying I'm willing to give the pad a shot for now if the menu doesn't cooperate.

Still hopefull it will be stable. No offense, but I'm not convinced some box in a gameshop is properly set up and maintained.

That is the trend, to cater to consoles.

Been in a gamestop recently and seen the PC section?

Ever wonder why digital download services took off?

I have faith in the TES modders to fix what Bethesda messes up. As they always do.

It's preloaded...I wanna play... NOW!

It is? I thought it was a result of games becoming bigger and more complex every year.

Nope. I bet it's pretty much non-existent though.

Convenience? Don't have to wonder about that for a second. Think you got it backwards though; pretty sure it was digital distribution that diminished regular retail.

That I'll agree to.
