Graphics Problem with DW

I just revisited Dangerous Waters and i know it is not primarily an eye-candy simulation but since i changed to a Geforce 6600 card some time ago the Graphics became a lot worse: Color changes appear as hard steps not in form of a soft transient.

There wasn't such a problem with my old GF4 Ti200 and i always thought that it had to do specifically with the 6600 card but it doesn't: On my notebook's GF 7400 it looks as bad. Playing around with the driver settings sadly didn't help at all.

I wonder if others noticed the same and if there is a solution for this?
The caustic effects which were pretty nice look horrible now.
