Default My first book about U-boat... recommandations?

I have received both my pay and my insurance claim return yesterday, I am now rich for a while with some money to spend. So, as I have now begun my WaW career as U-boat kaleu, I wanted to find a good book to read on u-boat tactics both on and under surface and life aboard the uboat.

Could you recommend me a good first book on this subject?

Thanks!

U boat Far From Home. By David Stevens - The Epic voyage of U 862 to Australia and New Zealand waters. Story is mainly about U862 but mentions other Boats that were in the Far east as well.

I have read this book twice and im reading it again for the 3rd, thing is every time i read it theirs something new i think my memory is going :rotfl:

One part i read the other night is about how some German uboat crews while stationed at Japanese own ports use to put out food & cigarettes for the English prisoners when they would walk back at night to their prison camp which was located next to the German Barracks they felt sorry for them as they looked too thin. Even tho it was against the Japanese rules to feed the prisoners they still risked it, by planting boxes containing the goods in certain places where the engish prisoners could grab them when walking pass without getting caught.

Book has a very good database at the end on every U boat allocated to the Far East and its outcome.

I recently read;

- Herbert A. Werner's: Iron Coffins - A Personal Account of the German U-Boat Battles of World War II.

- Lawrence Paterson's: U-boat War Patrol (U-564) = A complete U-boat patrol documented (a lot of authentical pictures).

Das Boot(The Boat)
Lothar-Gunther Buchheim

Work of fiction based on his experiences as a correspondent during the war.
If you want life aboard a U-Boat, this is very descriptive. From the boredom of endlessly patrolling to the terror of 6 hours of depth charge attack.

I have already read the book and seen the original uncut version. :p

I have ordered the book "Wolf Pack: The Story of U-Boat in World War II" by Gordon Williamson, and just received it today.

My next books:
- Karl Dönitz's Memoirs
- If it exits, an English translation of Karl-Friedrich Merten's anti-Buchheim essay "Wir U-Bootfahrer sagen: "Nein! So war das nicht!""
