Some nice artwork. The artist clearly knows his subjects.

Like Jimi Hendrix, Dick played a right handed guitar, left handed, restringing the guitar to make it work. Leo Fender at some point started making lefty guitars for left handed players. Leo also built a large number of Amplifier and guitar combinations only to see Dick Blow up the amps.

Actually, Dick Dale played a left-handed guitar, but he had it strung as if it were a right-handed model, so his guitar fretboard was actually upside-down from what a fully lefty guitar would be; Hendrix played a right-handed model restrung as a if it were a left-handed model, a complete opposite of Dick Dale's setup; it should also be noted that Hendrix was fully ambidextrous in regards to guitar playing; he could take a normal right-handed guitar, flip it over, and play normally; IIRC, Hendrix produced a track for a band Billy Gibbons was in and Jimi was frustrated the guitar track wasn't sounding just right and Gibbons, also frustrated by Jimi's frustration, told Hendrix to come into the studio and record the track himself if he thought he could do better; Hendrix came out of the control room into the studio, took up the guitar, a right-handed and strung model, flipped it over, had the track re-cued and played, nailing the track on the first try; the story further goes that Hendrix wanted a backwards guitar track and, without changing guitars, had the tape played back backwards and played over the reversed music, using the volume knob on the guitar to control the swells of sound; when the track was played back forwards, the backwards track was perfectly in sync with the rest of the song...

I have an inexpensive left-handed Strat copy I acquired many years ago that I restrung as a right handed guitar just to experiment with the sound possibilities; its a bit of work to play if you're used to a 'normal' Strat, since the controls are at the top of the body (actually more convenient), the trem bar screws in at the top of the bridge (makes it a task to hand mute the strings), and the body cutaways are reversed, with the deeper cutaway at the top; its the last, cutaway, problem that may have made Dick Dale opt for the left-handed body style, so as to get more reach on the higher frets...

It depends on what you consider 'surf music' and what you consider 'influence'. Dick Dale is widely acknowledged as having, if not totally created, at least being one of the very first to record 'surf music'. Now, there is the question of what is 'surf music'? Is it the Southern California phenomenon alone or is it a wider form? The Ventures were originally from Tacoma, Washington State, USA, and later moved to LA; they released their first hit, Walk, Don't Run in 1960, a year before Dale's first hit, but the recording doesn't really have that full 'surf music' sound the Ventures would have in later recordings...

In 1959, a full year before the Ventures, a duo of brothers, Santo & Johnny, recorded an instrument single, Sleep Walk, which a lot of people claim is the first record with the 'surf music' sound:

Legend also has it the Santo & Johnny recording was the first record ever heard by a youngster from Seattle, WA, named James Marshall Hendrix...

To further complicate matters regarding influences, there was a band, The Wailers (aka The Fabulous Wailers) from the same city as The Ventures, Tacoma, WA, and at exactly the same time, 1959, as the Ventures. The Wailers specialized in instrumentals that verged on the edge of 'surf music' and incorporated elements that would later be credited to surf players:

Here's an article about Dick Dale's influence on other bands:

R.I.P. Dick Dale: 12 Artists Influenced by the King of the Surf Guitar --

https://www.billboard.com/articles/c...influenced-rip

So, its a sort of personal choice of who you think influenced whom. I'm still not fully sure whom I want to credit...

I was a mad Roxy fanatic in my early twenties and Andy Mackay's playing was the reason I took up the saxophone myself
