In a vanilla state, yes it is terrible! You need a megamod like Sobers or The Wolves of Steel.

Unmodded, I made it to half of the first tutorial mission and was about to give up.

Modded... wait, is it almost May already?!

Here a picture of the stock game 1.2. I have played it for awhile just to broadly report its flaws, I had to take a pill after that...

--------------

Basically in the stock game you will have to step from 1 crew member to the next when giving orders. Original, but not very practical...

Giving crew orders from a icon menu? Hey, you are dreaming...not without NewUIs mod...

OMG, these glowings and talking bubbles, is this a comic strip or a sub game...Also these constant tutorial icons that you must close...

Map features? No need, you will always see 100% or your environment.

Firing torpedos based on a 3-circle system: the best invention since Pacman, but its' more suited to a shoot'em-up game...

Malfunctions: Torpedos always circling at some point, sudden underwater crashes, crew mis-behavior, vanishing targets, campaign not advancing etc.

Oh SH5 is absolutely terrible, until you install the Wolves of Steel Mod. Then it becomes the best WW2 submarine simulation there is. Absolutely amazing.

Default My 2 cents

With the WoS mega mod SH5 might not be a perfect sim...but it has resolved most of the flaws.

There is nothing like creeping our of the U-Boot pen on the way to the patrol area, the crashing of the sea as you wrestle with the N. Atlantic gale. The feeling of despondency when you sail around not finding a target...versus the sheer joy of sinking a ship and then contrast to the sheer terror of being in silent running, hearing the ominous ping then Wasserbomben sending a shudder down your spine.

The WoS megamod is awesome. I would highly recommend it to anyone that has a passing interest in submarines.

I second that.

My save in SH3 got corrupted and i wont be replaying whole 8 hours patrol with a chance to lose progress in the future again..

Put it this way, SH3 was also not a superb experience before modders got to work.

To all of you, FYI, I have released a modlist whith the purpose to maintain most of the stockgame features and play SH5 like it was intended, but adding the most significant mods released in the past 10 years, one of them being the TDW NewUIs allowing you to teleport between stations, adding a lot of plotting tools, allowing you to save supermarks, adding automation features that you can run as scripts.
The OH2 mod will enhance the campaign and will add new ships.
Most other mods will correct stock game flaws.

This modlist is for players who want a less difficult SH5 compared to TWoS.

Take a look in this thread:
