English 57-victory ace James McCudden flies across the Channel from England to France to join 60 Sqdn, which he is commanding. He lands at Auxi-le-Château, France, to get directions to his new aerodrome. He takes off again, and almost immediately his plane is seen to climb straight up until it stalls, then come straight down again to crash in the woods. Personnel from the aerodrome he had just departed pull him from the wreckage and rush him to the hospital, where he dies two hours later without regaining consciousness. As usual there is controversy regarding the crasg of a famous ace. The crash is at first thought to have been caused by a faulty carburetor, but some witnesses say McCudden had been "stunting", and possibly lost control of the plane. Also as usual, nothing is known for certain except that another great ace has been lost.
