Nice ! Very interesting !

What means "double" ????? :

250.) e) Run out and double at a good distance, and then make off on a straight course, in order to get well away from the pursuing enemy forces. Do not double frequently, or continually zigzag, because this results in loss of distance.

254.) d) Run out to a good distance, and double - no frequent zigzagging - and then make off on a straight course, in order to gain on the hunting vessels.

270.) After submerging during an attack, always go down at Once to depth A, and double.

In most militaries the term double means fast as possible!

That's not logical in this sentence : Do not double frequently, or continually zigzag, because this results in loss of distance.

I am only speaking from my experience in the military. Double quick, double march, double speed references in layman terms... move your ass!

I do know this. When you make an attack in the game, the destroyers make a straight path to your last location. So you want to get out of the area as soon as possible. I can see why "double" could mean 180degrees. You don't want to zig zag and double too much. Your objective is to get out of the possible detection area as soon as possible.

Cheers. Bookmarked. I might get something from this handbook, I'm a pretty useless submariner at the moment. Given time I might progress to pretty bad...

My guess is it means to double back. Meaning - go away from the area a good distance, double back and go off in a direction perpendicular to your heading after completing the 180 degree turn back. This will accomplush the effect of having the boat with its stern away from pursuers, cutting down on noise, immediately prior to departing the area.

Double back is how I read it too.

I don't understand very well. Could you draw the u-boat's route in these situations please ? :
