Default Who turned on my Radar?

SH4 1.5 with TMOwtw, early 1945 in the Tench. My first Tench patrol, at periscope depth, stalking a convoy. I was quite surprised when I raised my night periscope and started getting radar reports of enemy ships spotted. Later in the same patrol I surfaced near another convoy, radar sets turned off, and started getting radar sightings again. I verified that the radar sets were turned off, but the reports kept coming. What's up with this? Was there in fact a radar transceiver atop the night scope, and why do I get radar sightings reported even when the radar is turned off?

Tia

A more advances type also called periscope radar. I believe Ducimus has the repaired ST radar in TMO late in the War.

A little something about radar:
http://www.fleetsubmarine.com/radar.html

There are other sites that describe WW II Radar types

Happy Hunting!

radar

Thanks for the link, aanker. I didn't know that. So the map contact thing is not totally anachronistic, we just got PPI a few years early!

Everyone here has probably both seen the movie and read the book by Edward L Beach, RUN SILENT RUN DEEP. There were two sequels to the original story, in the second book, DUST ON THE SEA they describe the radar on the night scope (AKA observation scope) and the procedure for getting a quick snap range with it.
