My PA stopped working

My Pacific Aces suddenly stopped working. I have a Janus Log shown below. Any help would really be appreciated.

you might go under windows explorer to c:\program files\SSI\silent hunter II\"configure"& try reconfiguring your video card. that might help

Maybe it stopped working in time for SH4, because it knew it was coming out soon :hmm:?

I went to configure and there were no video choices in the to half of the configure.exe program. I tried typing in and it does not accept any keyboard input.

I reinstalled 3 times and eveything stopps with the screen blanker. It will not pick up my Video Settings. When I run the config the entries are blank. What is baffling me is that it used to work. Any further detailed help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I would say at fist sight that you have a problem with the hi-res kit, the one which allows you to play in 1024x768 instead of SH2 stock 800x600. Have you run the specific config exe of the hi-res kit? You must run first the normal game graphics configuration and then the hi-res kit, or select 1024x768 from the in-game menu.

Anyway, try also setting your exes -both the game's and the graphic's- to "compatibility with Windows 98" if you are using Windows XP. :hmm:

I have tried running both configs and get the blanks in the video areas. I cannot run it within the program because I cannot run the program past the screen blanker.

What are the exes?

This is a longshot and I don't understand why PA quit working for you in the 1st place but when you did the re-install did you also install Project Messerwetzer after the Vicker's mods and before the PA patches? I always had Janus errors until I installed PM.

I installed the recommended order in the PA documentation.

Looking at your configuration above, Silent Hunter II\Shell\SH2.exe is one of the exes. I don't know what the 2nd is. Right click on the PA shortcut and click Properties then the Compatibility tab he was referring to above.

Are you running 1024 x 768 on your desktop?

I went into the properties and change the shortcut to Win 98.

My screen was set to 1280 x 960, I went and tried it to the 1024 mode and it still does not get by the Screen Blanker.

No joy yet eh? I never had to change properties to 98. Did it run before at 1280 x 960 desktop resolution? Mine has always been 1024 x 768 for PA so I don't know if that even matters.

Could try another re-install ...first uninstall everything including SH2. Then install SH2 and its 1.1 patch and copy that folder to a backup and see if SH2 starts past the screen blanker then one by one add each step; Vickers Mods, PM, PA etc checking after each step to see if it starts... and if it does continue and back up after each step.

You would think this would be something simple.... I am stumped.

Hmmm...I never like to give the "cheap & dirty" answer...but this is really puzzling me. The funniest thing is that the mod did work for you, so there has been obviously some change in your OS that has made it stop working. What can it be? New software added, updated drivers for your graphic card, a DirectX reinstall.....hard to tell.

This points clearly to a problem with the graphic card related to the game engine, i.e. the game engine seems unable to tell the graphics card how to draw what it is expected to.

A rough guess would be a DirectX problem, so my advice is to reinstall the DX version you had and then reinstall your video card drivers again (This is guaranteed to be harmless, as those are the ones you already had. You will simply ensure that no program or accidental movement by you deleted any necessary driver).
