Winter 1940
Battle of El Alamein In the first major ground engagement between Axis and Commonwealth forces, the British government is claiming an important victory. The initial assault conducted by Italian forces on well dug in British Commonwealth lines was repulsed with heavy losses. German forces followed on with a massive armored assault that broke through the South African held lines, but did not have the strength remaining to get through the British armored forces. In open combat in the desert very large numbers of tanks on both sides were destroyed. But with too few remaining forces to reinforce the breakthrough and with the southern flank threatened by other British forces, Germany eventually decided to pull back all forces. Britain loses 3-4, 2o5 italy loses3-3,2-3 germany loses 4o6, 6aaf

Battle of Malta
Italian planes spot Britain's Battleship Task Force as it neared Malta and launch an attack with torpedo bombers. BB4 HMS Rodney took two torpedoes. The warship is still functioning, but it can't take too many of these. Italian submarines attacked and sank British destroyers screening the Task Force. DD1 sunk. However, Britain's sub performance was even worse. As they hastily left Malta in daylight to counterintercept, they were spotted leaving their berths. The first two were destroyed by bombs, and managed to block the harbor entrance, causing a backup from the other boats which was attacked relentlessly by italian planes. British submarine factor eliminated.

In a second wave of airstrikes, the British battleship BB3 HMS Valiant was damaged by torpedoes shortly before the Italian TFs converged on the British Task Force 3 as it was sailing line ahead. Caught by surprise, outnumbered and out of position the Royal Navy takes severe damage. BB3s HMS Malaya and HMS Ramilies are sunk, BB4 HMS Rodney taking more hits is damaged, the other battleships taking minor hits. The italians took only minor damage in the one-sided encounter. The British turned around and headed back to port. The Italian fleet returned as heroes, and Malta continues to starve Damaged Royal Navy warship upon return to port
