I have never really known what the W stands for. If anyones knows then please do tell. This 1 is actualy earlier than the WW1 Cross. The date on the cross is 1870 apposed to 1914.

The 'W' is the Royal Cipher and stands for "Wilhelm I". WWI medal's W stands for "Wilhelm II". The first IC had 'FW', which stood for Friedrich Wilhelm (King Fredrick III).

And yes, the IC you have is from the Franco-Prussian war era. WWI IC has 1914 written on it.
