Book: Ghost of Bungo Suido by Peter Deutermann
Anybody read this yet or have any input. I just finished the sample and while the price may be a little on the steep end the sample was pretty good. Been thinking of getting it.
Anyone read it all yet? The price is probably still up there even for an ebook because the cheaper paperback hasn't come out yet. It's still only available in hardback. That's probably when the ebook $$ will go down.

I will have to look that one up. I served with Pete's brother, Steve. Pete's books are okay, but not top novels.

This one kept me interested in what was going to happen during this event. Now what happens afterward in the downtime, crew character building, etc.. is another story. That has to be there as well or it gets to repetitious.

To me the story is about what happens off the submarine.
In Part 1: the story events on boat set up character for the Captain's action and his decision's after the primary mission. I thought it was well told but similar to other submarine WW2 books. In Part 2: The plot weaving a brutal story of survival. All his actions after the attack mission, his feeling of hopelessness. Japans illogical refusal to admit the war was lost. The brutality of humans and also the spirit of human spirit. In Part 3: The "discussion" and "reaction" of the USN to the Captain's story after the war is over; this is what made me pause and think. Although I was never in the military, the story has made me wonder how much of this adjuicate behavior went on. |
