Savegame crashes is an issue all on it's own. It doesn't have to be the fact that your OS is Windows 8. In the beginning of the GWX manual is a list of known bugs and quirks with SH3. Make sure you take that advice serious.

For starters:
- Do not save submerged.
- Do not save when in the vicinity of a known unit location. Often suggested to be no closer than 50km to a known unit, but hydrophone distance atleast is atleast 35km if you listen yourself. Make sure you do at least that test before you save. If you are near, move away!

Windows 8 can be a problem, but no more than Vista or 7 is, IF the game is somewhere installed into c:\Program Files\somekindoffolder. If you mod things in there then the changes might not be correctly applied because of UAC (user account control) protection. To make your life easier try to install the game in a custom folder on the drive.

I ran compatability and XP came up so I started to run it with these setting's........no more crash's and 3 test's to make sure, so

I learned something else with trying to run this SIM with 8.1,
