I got a question. I used to draw short comics while in high school and they're all on paper and I need a good tutorial on how to get scaned images of hand drawn images into Garfield quality comic strips

Something like this

Tried google, but nothing I can really use.

Torplexed might be able to help (at least I think he does/did some of his stuff on paper first).

@Lord_magerius

Very cool!

I take you used the tutorial @ deviantart for the planet?

It wasn't the Deviant art one but yeah I used a tutorial, didn't realise it was so simple to make planets

Edit: Might as well stick my latest WIP in here too, just wish I had a tablet. Would make things much easier

Hi Betonov, not sure if I understand you correctly but I think you're referring to what is generally known as the 'inking stage'. I have worked in the comics industry myself in the UK, and most comic artists will generally use either brushes, dip-pens or technical pens for this task (certainly is in the example above), or a combination of those. This is a whole skill in itself and the quality of your linework can make or break the artwork. Most comic artists develop their own style over time, and it is as much the linework as it is their drawing skills that make their work stand out. Certainly in the old days, there used to be a penciller and an inker, so different are the skills.

As with anything like this it is all about practice, no tutorial can teach you to do this as you will develop your own style over time. There's a couple of simple tips I can give you that might get you started-

-Increase the thickness of your lines anywhere where there would be 'shadow', and decrease the thickness where there would be 'light'- In the example cartoon above, you can see the artist has done this (thicker lines underneath the arms, head,etc.. and thinner lines above. This is why a brush is good for this task as simple pressure can alter thickness, dip-pen the same to some extent. Personally I use a brush, though both take a great deal of control and practice.

- Balance black & white areas. Create a balance between the black and the white. I think of it in terms of 'weight'. black is heavy, white is light. Arrange things logically with that in mind.

Hope this helps you. Good luck!

Very nice work, Dowly, and relevant to my interests, too.

Haven't been drawing or painting much lately. Thought I'd make amends with a fast-drawing filly.

I'm a 21 year old art studio major at UCSB who's looking to get an illustration degree in grad school at a CSU (or if I win the lottery, an actual art school a la CCA or Pasadena Art Center). Been working on this piece for a bit.

36x24 in canvas with oils.

As you can imagine, the hard part wasn't the Strike Eagle. I'm going to have to re-take a photo of this in actual daylight, and it still needs a couple more hours put into it, but for the moment, I'm got a much needed break from it.

A black and white charcoal piece on gray canson I did a few years back.

@Agiel7: I could see that Strike Eagle painting handing in the corridors of the Pentagon!
