That's unusual. I use GWX and it shows up for me. Then I get an answer back that says, "There are no reinforcements coming. Attack."

It's only useful for confirming the heading and speed of a convoy.

Midnightrider1818,

could it be that you are using H.Sie's hard-code fixes and you have not added the new text lines to the *_menu_'.txt file? This could exlain your missing messages.

Regards, LGN1

I've given up sending contact reports.

It's always the same message:

"Thank you for calling BdU. I'm afraid all our operators are busy at the moment but if you would like to leave your U-number, grid square and a brief message someone will eventually get back to you...BuZZZZZZZZZ....."

You need to install h.sie's and Stiebler's patches. Then you will start getting feedback from BdU - both good and bad, but relevant.

I don't think my radioman could cope with any increase in his workload...

YMMV. But your problem has a solution if you care to use it. One which is simple and more historically appropriate than never communicating with base. Of course, if your goal is BSU, your way works fine, too.

I don't consider it a problem, in fact it's a blessing. The principle reason U-boats chattered away to BdU and each other was to find and shadow convoys in the hope of vectoring other boats onto them. As there are no 'other boats' or wolf-packs in the game that particular historical aspect is irrelevant. The likelihood of the Luftwaffe turning-up is so remote that it isn't worth considering, hence the German military maxim "If it's green it's British; if it's silver it's American and if it's invisible it's the Luftwaffe." There aren't even any occasional weather reporting duties but I suppose one could sit in a grid square taking weather readings and transmitting status reports ever six hours to simulate it if one wished...

Although the Germans suspected that the Allies might be DF'ing their messages they did nothing serious about it. The more savvy skippers kept their transmissions brief and rare while the more inexperienced commanders (and there were plenty of those as the war progressed) committed suicide by radio. I maintain RS during patrols for the above reasons as the inherent limitations in the game are not my problem. You may differ but that's fine - each to their own interpretation of what is 'historical' or not. It's a game after all, not a religion.

A reminder for the newer SH3 players. The above is only true if you play SH3 without H.Sie's mod. With his mod there can be wolfpacks if you manage to send regular contact reports on the convoy you're stalking.

This is news to me and potentially changes everything after nine years of playing. Does it add AI controlled boats to the game or represent their attacks in some other way?

It adds AI boats. Sometimes you can watch their attacks. Plenty of reason to stay on the air.

@ BigWalleye and sublynx - thank you for the info. I'll be looking into this mod as it sounds like it adds the missing ingredient.

My radioman has heard he's in line for a raise due to the extra responsibility.

Here is waht you get with h.sie's patches:

Realistic Repair Times – Like it says.
WO and WP Range Inaccuracy – Includes a random factor, greater at longer range.
Snorkelling-Fix – Limits speed for snorkel use.
Hydrophone-Fix – Can’t use ‘phones when snorkeling on Diesels. Can't use 'phones running on surface.
External torpedo reload fix – Speed and weather limits and a delay if caught on surface.
Internal torpedo reload fix – Can’t reload while surfaced in bad weather.
“Crash dive blues“ - Bugfix – Retain control of the boat in a crash dive.
Move 1WO to bridge – Like it says.
Fog warning – Like it says. And when fog lifts.
Oxygen-Supply – Limited oxygen in boat. Limited replenishment from tanks. Both tunable. Affected by crew activity.
U-Tanker Mod – Limited resupply and repair. Don’t lose patrol results. Turnaround in one day (vice one month.)
BDU-Messages Mod –Response depends on torpedoes, damage, and fuel.
Radar Fix – Radar turns back on if swamped by a wave.
WarNews – No more TC1 to hear about the Battle of Minsk.
Wolfpack Mod – The Good Stuff. Call ‘em in. Beacon ‘em. Watch ‘em attack. But BdU is running the show from a long way away....
Battery Discharge Bugfix – No more “Energizer bunny” batteries at low speed.
Torpedo Failure Fix – Lots of changes, including weather effects.
Night Vision Fix – Eliminates Vampire crew.
Bad Weather Fix – Fixes endless storms.
Diesel Damages Fix – “Captain, the old girl kenna take much more!”
Ship Collision Damage Fix – Ram an escort, it’s gonna hurt you.
Torpedo Pistol Switch BugFix – Minor. Salvo pistols are ganged.

and the 4GB-Patch!

Stiebler's patches add:

Silent-Running mod – Run silent, no pumps. No pumps, sub slowly sinks....
Surrender mod – Can surrender, scuttle, and “maybe” get picked up.
“Smoke on Horizon” mod – A la AotD.
CAM-ship mod – CAM ships with functional planes.
Asdic mod – Limits ASDIC effectiveness in shallow water.
Reduce Ship Warnings mod – Reduces “Ship spotted!” when shadowing.
Change Patrol Grid mod – Let’s you request reassignment.
Minimum TC mod – Lets you lock TC at a preset minimum, ignoring sightings.
Improved BdU Congratulations Fix – More messages, based on patrol results.
Null Grid Mod – Assigns a new grid if you replenish at non-home port.
Weather Meter – Changes the Noise Meter to display current weather.
AirTorpedo (Fido) mod – No graphics, but they’re real, baby! There is a compatible graphics mod, if you like to watch....

LOTS OF GOOD STUFF! And each one can be separately switched on or off, as you choose.

Don't leave Kiel without it!

I get this all the time with GWX and a few mods.

You will not always send a contact report. If you've recently sent one on the contact, I don't think it sends another. You'll get the "Report Sent" dialog, but if you go look at your message log, no message is actually sent.

Also, your crew has to be able to see the contacts before the radio contact will send. Not just you. You might be able to see the contacts, but if your crew can't, then no contact report will get sent.

Basically you have to wait for your crew to say, "Ship Sighted!" Then you can send the contact report.
