Paul Kantner was the driving force behind the Airplane; it was at his insistence the band hired a female co-lead singer, first Signe Anderson (who left the Airplane to be a full-time mom), and then Grace Slick, who along with Kantner, defined the sound of the Airplane. Kantner was more of a quiet presence in the band, choosing to let Grace and Marty Balin, along with master guitarist Jorma Kaukonen and amazing bass player Jack Casady, take center stage in the spotlight. But it was Paul who called the shots, musically. He was a bit gruff and could be stubborn, but the music he and the Airplane produced was unique and influential.

Notice that Paul is the only member of the band who chose not to wear a suit or formal attire; rock and roll will never die...

Chauffeur Blues (Live, Signe's Last) Signe Toly Anderson, original singer before Grace Slick of the Jefferson Airplane, died the same day as lead guitarist Paul Kantnor..."In a statement, Jefferson Airplane co-founder Marty Balin wrote, “One sweet Lady has passed on. I imagine that she and Paul woke up in heaven and said ‘Hey what are you doing here? Let’s start a band.’”

Very sad to hear about Signe Anderson; she may have been overshadowed by Grace Slick, but she set the foundation of the Airplane's sound. She also stayed in contact with the other Airplane members and was still highly regarded by her former band mates...
