I can only speak from my experience with the original...

The game for me was pretty stable, unless I tried to pilot one of the aircraft, at that point my chances were pretty good for a CTD. Didn't bother me too much, cuz I really don't care for the action sequence stuff anyway, I much preferred the overhead tactical view.

The AI wasn't too difficult to beat. You'll find that there are a couple (somewhat non-realistic) strategies that will definitely give the human player an edge. You'd never want to try to go toe-to-toe with your task forces... Rather, you raid their task forces with suicide sub packs, while chasing down their convoys with your cruisers and battleships. Once you've crippled their task force, you can then finish em off with your capital ships. You really do feel the pain when you lose capital ships, it takes forever to build new ones. I focus my attention on building as many subs as possible.

Really wish they'd scrap the "lemme fly the plane" stuff and just focus on the tactical game. Modelling landing parties and ground force confrontations would've been much better time spent in my opinion. Instead you get this throwback to the first Pirates game (machine gun sounds and decreasing troop counts) for your land battles.

The tactical game is very good I think. Which is what is prompting me to place my order this week as well. It is a little tedious, and very detailed, I like how you can upgrade and reclass your ships for instance. The logistics involved in keeping your forces supplied makes the game interesting from the tactical standpoint but will frustrate casual players. Which is kinda strange... they try to cater to the casual player with this arcady "action" component that the tactical players won't like, and then they make the tactical side very intricate which the casual players won't like. SOoo... It's bound to irritate everyone at some level.

Hello,

here a review from Pacific Storm: Allies.
It´s in German but for the one, who understand it´s very interesting, i think.

Is this really similar as the game "1942 Pacific air war" from Microprose...
Man, I spend hours playing that game, this looks a lot more elaborate than the old game.

DL-ing the demo now... when I like I get the real deal.

Really enjoying this game.

The manual implies that one can switch from strategic to tactical level (at any time) but I have yet to manage to figure out how to switch to tactical level except when a battle is joined.

This makes doing a "recon" or "infiltration" mission rather challenging as ones resolution of unit movement at the strategic level is very coarse.
