Germany establishes the Crimean Regional Government to administer the occupied Crimean Peninsula.

German Foreign Secretary von Kühlmann makes a speech admitting the war cannot be won with force alone and Germany must resort to diplomacy. The speech angers the German military and other militarists.

Ship Losses:

African Transport (United Kingdom) The cargo ship was torpedoed and sunk in the North Sea 3 nautical miles (5.6 km) north of Whitby, Yorkshire by SM UB-88 ( Kaiserliche Marine) with the loss of three of her crew.
Moorlands (United Kingdom) The cargo ship was torpedoed and sunk in the North Sea 3 nautical miles (5.6 km) south east of Whitby by SM UB-88 ( Kaiserliche Marine) with the loss of ten of her crew.
Orissa (United Kingdom) The passenger ship was torpedoed and sunk in the Atlantic Ocean 21 nautical miles (39 km) south west by west of Skerryvore by SM UB-73 ( Kaiserliche Marine) with the loss of six lives.
SMS T59 (Kaiserliche Marine) The torpedo boat collided with another vessel and sank in the Baltic Sea with the loss of 21 of her crew.

German air-raid on Paris.

American soldiers win the Battle of Belleau Wood, clearing the forest of German forces. Major Shearer reports: “Woods now U.S. Marine Corps entirely.”

Eastern Front

Peace Treaty between Germany and Finland ratified.

Naval

SS Wimmera, an Australian passenger ship, hits a mine laid by the German merchant raider SMS Wolf off the coast of New Zealand and sinks, resulting in 26 deaths.


Political, etc.

Labour Conference in London.

House of Lords approves principle of League of Nations.

Kyrion II of Georgia, the head of the Georgian Orthodox Church, is murdered at his residence. The perpetrator and motive are unknown.


Ship Losses:

HMT Achilles II (Royal Navy) The naval trawler struck a mine laid by UC 4 (Eberhard Schmidt) and sank in the North Sea off the Shipwash Lightship ( United Kingdom) (52°04′30″N 1°48′00″E) with the loss of thirteen of her crew.
Atlantian (United Kingdom) The passenger ship was torpedoed and sunk in the Atlantic Ocean 110 nautical miles (200 km) north west by west of Eagle Island, County Mayo (55°42′N 12°57′W) by SM U-86 ( Kaiserliche Marine). Her crew survived, but two of them were taken as prisoners of war.
Tortuguero (United Kingdom) The cargo ship was torpedoed and sunk in the Atlantic Ocean 205 nautical miles (380 km) north west of Eagle Island (55°50′N 15°30′W) by SM U-156 ( Kaiserliche Marine) with the loss of twelve of her crew.
SM UC-11 (Kaiserliche Marine) The Type UC I submarine struck a mine and sank in the Strait of Dover (51°55′N 1°41′E) with the loss of eighteen of her nineteen crew.
Wimmera (United Kingdom) The passenger ship struck a mine laid by the merchant raider SMS Wolf ( Kaiserliche Marine) and sank in the Pacific Ocean 24 nautical miles (44 km) northwest of Hooper's Point, South Island, New Zealand, with the loss of 10 passengers and 16 of her crew. sixty-six passengers and 59 crew members survived.

1945 Lawrence Coombes, Ivan Sandrson and Russell score three more kills together, shooting down another Fokker D.VIIs and two Pfalz D.IIIs. Victories 10, 11 and 12 for Coombes; 3, 4 and 5 for Sanderson; and 2, 3 and 4 for Unger.

2015 German ace Josef Jacobs, in a Fokker Dr.I, shoots down Sopwith Camel D9614 for victory number 22. 2nd Lt C.D. booth is wounded, and dies later.

2020 German ace Fritz Rumey, in an Albatros D.Va, shoots down Sopwith Camel D6630 for victory number 26. Lt E.C. Eaton is killed.

2025 German pilot Friedrich Schumacher, in a Fokker D.VII, destroys a French observation balloon for victory number 2. MdL Wissemberger, 59° Cie d’Aerostiérs parachutes safely.

Keelung (United Kingdom) The cargo ship was torpedoed and sunk in the Atlantic Ocean 110 nautical miles (200 km) west by south of Ouessant, Finistère, France by SM U-53 ( Kaiserliche Marine) with the loss of six crew.
HMHS Llandovery Castle (Royal Navy) The hospital ship was torpedoed and sunk in the Atlantic Ocean 116 nautical miles (215 km) west of the Fastnet Rock by SM U-86 ( Kaiserliche Marine) with the loss of 234 of the 258 people on board.
Sotolongo (Spain) The cargo ship was sunk in the Mediterranean Sea 35 nautical miles (65 km) off Maritimo Island (38°04′N 11°21′E) by SM U-65 ( Kaiserliche Marine). Her crew survived.

1516 German pilot Vfw Stadly (or Stadley - sources vary), in Albatros D.Va 7285/17, destroys a French observation balloon for his first and only victory. Stadly is shot down by French AA fire during the attack, wounded and taken prisoner. He will later die from his wounds.

1520 English RAF pilot Laurence Pearson and observer Edward Darby, in DH.4 A8025, shoot down a Pfalz D.III. Victory number 3 for both.

1620 Australian AFC pilot Edgar McCloughry, flying Sopwith Camel D1961, shoots down an LVG two-seater for victory number 4.

1725 German ace Hans Müller, with Jasta 18, shoots down DH.9 A7670 for victory number 6. Lt J. Webster and 2nd Lt G.M. Gray are both taken prisoner.

1800 English RAF ace pilot Frank Ransley, in Bristol F.2b C808 with 2nd Lt L.W. Davies as observer, shoots down a Fokker D.VII for victory number 9. This is Frank Cecil Ransley's last aerial victory. After the war he will have a career in the Prison Service, as Assistant House Master in 1924, House Master in 1928, and Governor in 1932. He will live until 1992.

1900 German ace Albert Haussmann, with Jasta 13, shoots down a Bristol F.2b for victory number 8.

1905 German ace Rudolf Berthold, in a Fokker D.VII, shoots down a Bristol F.2b for victory number 37.

Queen (United Kingdom) The cargo ship was torpedoed and sunk in the Atlantic Ocean 130 nautical miles (240 km) north of Cape Villano, Spain (44°25′N 10°25′W) by SM U-53 ( Kaiserliche Marine) with the loss of twenty crew.
Sunniva (United Kingdom) The cargo ship was torpedoed and sunk in the North Sea 4 nautical miles (7.4 km) east of Sunderland, County Durham by SM UC-17 ( Kaiserliche Marine) with the loss of two of her crew.

U.S. announces it is committed in freeing “all branches of the Slav race” from German and Austrian rule after the war.

Ship Losses:

Ariadne (Norway) The sailing vessel was damaged in the North Sea (57°20′N 5°32′E) by SM UC-59 ( Kaiserliche Marine). She was towed into Frederikshavn but was declared a constructive total loss.
Castor I (Norway) The sailing vessel was sunk in the North Sea 30 nautical miles (56 km) west of Ragefjord by SM U-107 ( Kaiserliche Marine). Her crew survived.
Drowning Thyra (Denmark) The auxiliary four-masted schooner was sunk in the North Sea 20 nautical miles (37 km) off Lindesnes, Vest-Agder, Norway (57°30′N 6°42′E) by SM UC-59 ( Kaiserliche Marine). Her crew survived.
Florentia (United Kingdom) The cargo ship was torpedoed and sunk in the North Sea 2 nautical miles (3.7 km) east by north of Robin Hood's Bay, Yorkshire by SM UB-40 ( Kaiserliche Marine) with the loss of three of her crew.
Grekland (Sweden) The cargo ship was sunk in the North Sea east of Flamborough Head, Yorkshire (54°09′N 0°02′E) by SM UB-40 ( Kaiserliche Marine), with the loss of one crew member.
Herdis (United Kingdom) The cargo ship was torpedoed and sunk in the North Sea 7 nautical miles (13 km) south east by south of Robin Hood's Bay (54°20′N 0°20′W) by SM UB-88 ( Kaiserliche Marine). Her crew survived.
Midstjø (Norway) The sailing vessel was sunk in the Skagerrak 15 nautical miles (28 km) south of the Songvår Lighthouse, Vest-Agder by SM U-80 ( Kaiserliche Marine). Her crew survived.

Origen (United Kingdom) The cargo ship was torpedoed and sunk in the Atlantic Ocean 115 nautical miles (213 km) west of Ouessant, Finistère, France by a Kaiserliche Marine submarine with the loss of a crew member.
W. M. L. (United Kingdom) The three-masted schooner was shelled and sunk in the Atlantic Ocean 400 nautical miles (740 km) north north west of Cape Finisterre, Spain by SM U-53 ( Kaiserliche Marine) with the loss of four crew.

MERCHANT SHIPPING

British, Allied and Neutral ships lost to enemy submarines, mines and cruisers etc in the month - 119 ships of 263,000 tons gross. (Lloyd's War Losses)
