^ i would not have enough even then. Maybe sell a kidney or so
Really, usually there is a bunch of enthusiasts who "buy" the boat together, so it is used regularly. And the boat is not paid for, but financed, and maybe even lent out for charter to other people. Most people have not the time to use such a boat as it should be.
Another thing is you have to sail where the boat is based; if you suddenly decide you'd like to sail around Sardinia or in the Carribean, you would have to get the boat there and most people do not have the time.
So for me it is easier to charter – yes it is not the own boat, technical problems because of neglect (seldom though) but you can sail for 2-4 weeks where you want, and you do not need a winter storage.
One of our last trips were from Kiel to Gotland, in a Malö 42. Despite of its mobile home impression it is quite a fast boat, and was in perfect shape.

@Aktung yes, i am mean while not sure though whether the Hallberg-Rassy's red sail isn't indeed a spinnaker?

Sometimes I wish I was an octopus, so I could slap eight people at once.

I would like to see a 500 page report and a 25 year investigation spending millions on proving that point.
