The US says "serious negotiations" are taking place on a new Gaza truce and the release of more Israeli hostages.

But prospects remain uncertain after Hamas's leader reportedly rejected the idea of a temporary pause during talks in Cairo on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Israeli forces say they’ve uncovered a network of tunnels in the heart of Gaza City with entrances connected to the houses of Hamas leaders.

On Wednesday, the Hamas-run Gaza government said 20,000 people had been killed there since Israel launched its military campaign against the group.

And the UN Security Council again postponed a meeting to discuss calls for "urgent humanitarian pauses" in Gaza.

A draft resolution by the United Arab Emirates also called for the return of hostages and a two-state solution for Israel and the Palestinians.

Israel began its campaign in Gaza after Hamas broke through the heavily-guarded perimeter with Israel on 7 October, killing 1,200 people and taking 240 hostages, some of whom have been freed.

The US has expressed support for the UN's latest draft resolution on humanitarian aid for Gaza - a vote for which is expected later today.

The original draft called for a sustainable cessation of hostilities, but the final version calls for creating the conditions for one.

It comes as the World Food Programme says Gaza is at risk of famine within six months if the conflict doesn't end.

Meanwhile, Hamas says Palestinian groups have rejected the prospect of further hostage releases until Israel agrees to end the war in Gaza.

More than 240 Israeli hostages were captured during Hamas's 7 October attacks, with more than 100 of them released in a truce last month.

On Wednesday, the Hamas-run Gaza government said 20,000 people had been killed in the enclave since the war erupted.

Israel began its offensive after Hamas fighters crossed the border, killing 1,200 people.

Democrats & UN must be worried that Hamas might be running low on rockets.

Israeli strikes on Gaza continue as UN calls for more aid

Quote:
Israel's bombardment of the Gaza Strip continued late into the night on Friday, with reports of sustained air strikes and ground attacks.

A strike on the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza killed at least 18 people, according to Palestinian media.

People in another camp, Bureij, were ordered by Israel's army to move south as it continued its ground offensive.

In New York, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution urging more humanitarian aid for Gaza.

However the motion fell short of calling for an immediate ceasefire in the war.

Wafa, the official Palestinian news agency, said at least 18 people died and dozens were injured in an air strike on a house in Nuseirat, in central Gaza.

An air strike also destroyed a water treatment plant in Jabalia, northern Gaza, it added.

Residents of Bureij, which is close to Nuseirat, were ordered to "leave immediately for their own security" and move south towards the city of Deir al-Balah.

"Where should we go to?" Ziad, a medic and father of six, told Reuters news agency by phone. "There is no safe place."

Another displaced person, wheelchair user Walaa al-Medini, said she had been injured in a strike on her home in Gaza City.

"This is not a life: no water, no food, nothing," she told AFP news agency.

The Palestine Red Crescent Society said air strikes had been conducted near its Al-Amal Hospital in the southern city of Khan Younis.

Doctors Without Borders said in a post on X, formerly Twitter, that Israel's "indiscriminate strikes" on Gaza had "turned the north of the Strip into a pile of rubble".

It added that in Al-Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, "the dead and wounded continue to arrive almost every day".

The UN's World Food Programme says that about a quarter of all households in Gaza - roughly 500,000 people - are facing "catastrophic hunger conditions", with food and water running out.

Israel vows to continue 'difficult' military operation in Gaza

Quote:
The Israeli military has vowed to continue its operation in Gaza, but admitted it is "protracted" and "difficult".

A spokesman said over the weekend it was expanding its "ground operations in the southern and northern Gaza Strip".

Meanwhile, the US said Joe Biden spoke to the Israeli PM and emphasised the "critical need" to protect civilians.

In response, Benjamin Netanyahu said the war would go on until all Israeli goals were achieved.

President Biden also told reporters that he had not asked Mr Netanyahu for a ceasefire.

On Friday, the UN Security Council approved a resolution demanding large-scale aid deliveries to Gaza - but stopped short of calling for a ceasefire between the two warring sides.

Talks held in Egypt earlier this week designed to secure a fresh truce between Israel and Hamas have so far failed to deliver results.

A Palestinian official familiar with the ceasefire negotiations has told the BBC that Egypt presented a new three-stage plan that begins with a two-week humanitarian truce which could be extended, during which Hamas releases 40 hostages and Israel releases 120 Palestinian prisoners.

This stage would be followed by the formation of an independent body to deal with humanitarian relief and reconstruction, as well as a comprehensive ceasefire and an exchange of prisoners.

The Egyptian proposal ignores Israel's intention to weed out Hamas' political and military structures for Gaza once and forever. Hamas still launches rockets and missiles at Israel EVERY DAY.

If I were Israel, I would play the game even tougher. I would refuse Hamas negotiations, instead offer a deal to the world: For every lets say 15 trucks of aid, one hostage is to be freed. No hostage free - no aid goes in. I would starts with a low number like for example ten, and then allow getting "negotiated" upwards" to for example 20 trucks per hostage, if there even would be negotiations. The point is: this way the blame for no aid going into Gaza is reflected back onto Hamas if they do not agree. There is also a chance, althoigh irrationality is the rule in that region, that the people would start to turn against Hamas. It would take the wind out of many internationall voices' sails.

It should also be refused by the West to spend money on reconstruction and for aid into Gaza, or the West Joran area. After all, the plac i s not Europe, but the orient, the Middle East. The Arab nations are stinking rich, and although they dispise Palestinians and see them like Westerners see gypsies, they nevertheless opportunistically use them to set up a morally blackmailing game to set up pressure against the West and Israel. Let the Arabs pay for thei dear brothers and sisters. And if they don't, than we hold the mirror up to them.

Oh wait, there is the political left and the academic antisemitic elites endlessly preventing this. Heck, guess we are screwed... So, more Westeren self-mortification. We are weak spineless dwarves - und das kotzt mich nur noch an.

Hamas says 70 killed in Israeli air strike on camp

Quote:
Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry says an Israeli air strike killed at least 70 people in the Al-Maghazi refugee camp in the centre of the strip.

A spokesman said the death toll was likely to rise given the large number of families living in the area.

The Israeli military told the BBC it was looking into reports of the strike.

It comes as Israeli and Arab media say Egypt, which borders the Gaza Strip, has put forward a new proposal for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

Dozens of injured people were rushed from Maghazi to nearby Al-Aqsa Hospital with footage showing some children's faces covered in blood and body bags piled outside.

The health ministry says three houses were hit in the attack late on Sunday.

According to ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra, a densely populated residential block was destroyed.

A father said he had lost his daughter and grandchildren, adding that his family had fled from the north for safety in central Gaza.

"They lived on the third floor of one of the buildings," he said. "The wall collapsed on them. My grandchildren, my daughter, her husband - all gone.

"We are all targeted. Civilians are targeted. There is no safe place. They told us to leave Gaza City - now we came to central Gaza to die."

The Palestine Red Crescent Society says "intense" Israeli air strikes have led to the closure of main roads between Maghazi and two other refugee camps, Al-Bureij and Al-Nuseirat, "hindering the work of ambulances and rescue teams".

In a statement to the BBC, the Israeli military said it had received "reports of an incident in the Maghazi camp".

"Despite the challenges posed by Hamas terrorists operating within civilian areas in Gaza, the IDF [Israeli Defense Forces] is committed to international law including taking feasible steps to minimize harm to civilians," it added.

According to the health ministry, more than 20,000 people have been killed - mostly children and women - and 54,000 injured in Gaza since 7 October, when Hamas and other Palestinian groups attacked Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking about 240 hostages.

The Israeli military said more than a dozen soldiers had been killed in Gaza since Friday, bringing the total for the ground offensive launched after 7 October to 156.

Saturday was one of its deadliest days but Mr Netanyahu said there was "no choice" but to keep fighting.
