After careful consideration and discussion with Neal we have decided to merge this and the Tories threads together.

There is no accusation of foul play or anything else but it is felt one thread on the theme of UK politics is sufficient and in keeping with the previous decisions taken on topics involving Obama and gun control etc.

In addition it gives everyone the opportunity to submit their comments on whichever party and whatever policies they would like to comment on.

Perhaps the Tories have gone too far in privatising the NHS.

I've just been told I have McAIDS.

Works for me, Jim. We can slag the Tories off and discuss the politics seriously in one thread, I'd wager.

Im confused, Do you vote for a prime minister or do you vote for a party and they decide who represents them?

Also what good is having a monarchy if the Queen (or King) cant say to hell with it, off with his head!

They're national symbols, public relations mascots, and a moneymaking industry all in one. They divide their time between charitable work and having entertaining scandals.

Besides, the alternative, a President Cameron (or Presidents Brown, Blair, Major, Thatcher, etc.) is so repellant a concept to your average Brit as to kill the debate about killing off the monarchy.

Besides, think of all the tabloid reporters who would be without a job if the Royal Family weren't there to provide them with stuff to get outraged at?

President Anthony Charles Lynton "Tony" Blair.

That's got to be the best advertisement for keeping the Monarchy you can think of!

Along with the thought of Fat 'Eck being President of an independent Republic of Scotland......

Mike.

Indeed, God help us, a President Cameron or a President Brown...egads, it's enough to make your hair curl.

The Monarch can't shut down a parliament, the Fixed-term Parliaments Act of 2011 removed that particular power. It's not been used in the UK by the monarch since 1834 anyway, and I think even overseas it's handled by the Governor-General, it certainly was in Australia in '75 anyway, and it's very rare and must be very serious for the Queen (or King) to actively get involved in a parliamentary crisis.
The shadow of 1640 still hangs over our monarch-parliament affairs, the monarch remembers that the last monarch to try to rule without parliament had his head removed, and parliament remembers the dismal failure that was the English Republic.

I see in the news UKIP is at war with its self first Douglas Carswell saying he dose not need to use the £650,000 in full and UKIP goes a bit potty telling him he must. On this one I will defend Mr Carswell who shows common sense just a shame the rest of Westminster MP's don't with their money.

Moving on..

Quote:
Nigel Farage has become a "snarling, thin-skinned, aggressive" man, UKIP's election campaign chief has said in a powerful attack on the party leader.
Economics spokesman Patrick O'Flynn told The Times Mr Farage risked turning the party into a "personality cult".
And a senior UKIP source told the BBC that Mr Farage should face a leadership contest.

Well to a point I agree Farage stepped down and there for if he wants the leadership again stand in the leadership election. Just because his fan club said no you must stay dose not mean he can say well my fan club has spoken.

Indeed, it was a savvy decision by Carswell. I don't like UKIP but I think he made the right choice, however Farages fan club seem to be ready to try to keep him in power wherever they can. That kind of thinking will destroy the party with a civil war if they don't watch out.

So what makes him think there are any more than a handful of people who actually take any notice of him?
