Nice to see the media reporting on the hefty protest going on in London, I imagine the papers will focus primarily on the defacing of the womens war memorial and not the protest itself, but there you go, that's how it goes.

What is the point of protesting after an election?? Can anyone explain? Are you protesting against the majority that voted against your preferences?

It would be like staging protests when Obama was first elected. But it didn't happen, because whats the point? You lost!

In Cardiff, about 200 people joined a similar rally against austerity cuts, where singer Charlotte Church carried a placard saying she was "mad as hell".

Probably not making the headlines it should so that others don't jump on the bandwagon like previous protests.

Socialist Worker placards saying Tories Out - didn't they realise there was an election where if things were even more democratic then UKIP would have tens of seats instead of just one.

I expect there will be more of these, not so much because the Tories got in, but because of the effects that their austerity plans have been and will have on the country in regards to suicides, poverty, food banks, etc.
Of course you're going to get people hijacking protests and you're going to get people going violent and conducting vandalism, you get that with any protest involving the youth.
I believe in regards to this protest it was initially planned to protest David Cameron still being in Downing Street despite being in a minority government, and was originally going to be cancelled when he got a majority, but then people decided to go anyway.

The thing is, I think we're going to see a potential for transition away from peaceful protest into violent ones, primarily because peaceful protest seems to have minimal to zero impact. The news does not report peaceful protests because a) it doesn't get enough ratings and b) they don't want to encourage more people to join them, but when those same protests turn into a full scale riot, then finally the cameras start rolling and coverage begins to happen.
Take a look at Baltimore, the first time most of the world heard about it was when people started setting fire to things.
Of course, this undermines their message and leads to the cause being villified, but frustration will lead to anger and violence.

In short, really, unless you wield some form of power (Large Union or part of key infrastructure [I'm thinking of the Fuel Protests here]) then a peaceful protest seems to have minimal effect, and probably won't even be heard by those it's directed at, and I think people are starting to realise that, and will probably escalate. To just dismiss them as troublemakers is to dramatically underestimate the situation I think.

Listening to the radio today and I felt sick! The damage Labour rec'd at the GE & LE has put them back 10 years! A Labour supporter said Labour may as well write off 2020 GE, they may get back in 2025 as the country will most likely want change. The only hope rests on two things, the Tories will screw up big time or another world recession.


Mean while in the news Cameron wants more time for the EU Referendum, a sign of back peddling? Only time will tell.

After losing my home due to conservative cuts I sarcastically wrote to my Tory MP informing them that my wife and I were very comfortable sleeping in the front seats of our car but if we were to have a child in the future we could probably accommodate them in the boot.

We are now paying bedroom tax.

Maybe it's me who do not really understand the English election system.

Here at subsim and some of my english FB-friends are not so happy about Tories and Cameron.

That makes me wonder-who could this party get a Majority ?

Well, it can happen quite easily by not bothering to participate. For example, a high proportion of those who would benefit from Labour staying well left of center did not appear to vote. Inner Manchester 'working class' areas have had turnout as low as 18%, and has been referred to in the past as Apathy Central. Some are angry with the system. Some don't believe in politics. One turn-off for voters could be the way the debate is being conducted. It's often seen as bland and repetitive with three men in grey suits throwing insults at each other. It is turning people off to the process.

It's the same as here in the States. Some feel that any participation in the vote results in no improvement for them..so why bother?
