I've long maintained cats are more intelligent than dogs (though I like both); if you throw a ball or stick and say "fetch", a dog will dutifully trot off and retrieve it. Try the same with a cat and the cat will simply look at you as if to say: "Silly human, if you wanted it, why did you throw it away?" Also, I have yet to see a cat uselessly chase after a car...

I recall reading someplace (couldn't find the reference, sorry) about cats, that whereas people domesticated dogs for food, protection and hunting, cats domesticated people for the same reasons. The theory goes something like this:

When civilization begin in Mesopotamia small cats were low-end predators near the bottom of the food chain and prey to assorted raptors and larger hunters. Villages and agriculture attracted vermin, mice rats etc. and cats quickly created an ecological niche for themselves killing and eating the vermin while using human habitation as a shield from their natural enemies.

The net result is that while dogs tend to be ingratiating since they were bred to perform certain roles within society, cats remained aloof and indifferent since people's protection was incidental as cats went about their business killing our vermin and so doing us some sort of favour.

Don't know if this is accurate or even a valid interpretation of the record but it certainly explains why cats are, well... Cats.
