Das Boot, Crimson Tide and Hunt for Red October. You just gotta love the Sonar in Crimson Tide, and the Bridge in Red October

I enjoyed Below. It was a different kind of sub movie.

The part were the XO is looking in the mirror and turns away but the face in the mirror is still looking straight ahead is so creepy.
I thought it was a good movie for what it was made for. |

As a connoisseur of crappy B movies (Mystery Science Theater anyone?) I absolutely love the 50's epic "Atomic Submarine", a stirring tale of battle beneath the Arctic ice as the latest US atom sub chases a dangerous UFO underwater. It has all the cheap Hollywood sub cliches, with the added bonus of 50's UFO movie cliches too. The alien baddy is pure class as well. If you even wondered where the Simpsons writers came up with Kang and Kodos, now you know!
In a way Das Boot has ruined normal submarine movies for me. If one of the old Hollywood sub movies came on (Run Silent, Run Deep - Enemy Below, etc) I used to sit and watch it quite happily, even though I knew it wasn't too accurate. After watching DB, everything else looks amateurish and cheerful in comparison; huge sparse interiors, cliched goodies and baddies, happy endings and so forth. At least Atomic Submarine is supposed to be crap, it doesn't spoil that. |

I have to vote for Das Boot. But, only because there is no US Fleet boat movie comparable to Das Boot. It saddens me to admit that there is no fleet boat movie that can come close to portraying an authentic war patrol. I can only hope that a realistic US Pacific Theater movie will be made someday. Perhaps relating the now declassified actions of some of the great patrols turned in by the hard hitting boats like Silversides or Drum. Actually doing Run Silent, Run Deep with CGI special effects and more closely staying to the book would be very interesting to me.

The book was actually quite an interesting read. I remember reading it when I was about 12 and the memory of it has stuck with me to this day. I don't know that it would be a match for Das Boot, but it would certainly be the best US sub movie from WWII.

Might be this one if you understand Russian. I watched it. Didn't understand a single word but it was interesting. |
