It's possible your rig has a boot.outie instead.
I'M JUST KIDDING! If I can get it to work on my computer I'll let you know. |

Danke for the quick answers both of you. Thanks for the link Jim that tells me to make a backup and how.
Now we'll see what happens.

The best of British Steve....take great care mate (you should be fine once you have confirmation of a backup).
TBH though I would still search the SS forum because I know one or two have performed the operation successfully already, I simply can't remember who they were though

Well, I don't know how to tell if it actually worked or not, but it restarted with no problems, and that's always a good thing.

Well I added the PAE switch and she boots up fine. When I go to My Computer and look at Properties there it still shows only 3.25 GB of RAM. Is it supposed to acknowledge the extra RAM there or not? (I actually have 6 GB of RAM installed, but just getting a full 4 would be nice.)
Also I tried the 3GB switch for XP a while back and couldn't get it to work - the only likely reason I could find was that it probably wouldn't work because I have a 1 GB RAM gfx card and apparently if the video RAM is that high it conflicts with devoting a full 3GB to other processes or something because there's not enough left over given the 3.25 GB limit with XP normally. But if Windows is recognizing the additional RAM because of the /PAE switch, could I then try adding the /3GB switch as well, would the recognition of the extra RAM make any difference? Or is it strictly one or the other? |

The next test is whether the game boots with all the mods enabled I suppose

WHAT?
When I boot it up now it goes to a "Do you want to start in Windows or start XP normally?" screen. The keys don't work, so after 30 seconds it starts in Windows XP, just like always, so I don't worry about it, as it takes three minutes to load everything anyway. The game plays just like always, and I can't tell any difference yet, so I really wasn't concerned enough to say anything. SO THERE!
