Useless parhaps, but nevertheless a part of US Presidential history.

Quote:
You know that your party gets a little wilder than originally planned? When US President Andrew Jackson was to become President in 1829, he continued following Thomas Jefferson's example and held an open house in the White House. After Jackson took the oath and addressed Congress, he returned to the White House, which was filled with politicians, celebrities, and ordinary citizens, ready to party. Not surprisingly, the party developed rapidly as more and more people joined in, and eventually there were 20,000 people who jumped up in the furniture with dirty shoes and waded around the White House looking for souvenirs. However, the staff at the White House lured the guests out of the house by placing washbasins filled with juice and whiskey out on the lawn. However, the tradition was continued for a while, but an assassination attempt put a damper on the idea, and Grover Cleveland replaced the tradition with a parade instead in 1885.

Rollercoasters were invented to distract Americans from sinning.

Whiskey was invented to keep the Scots and Irish from ruling the world.

That's WHISKY in Scotland; WHISKEY in Ireland, ya illiterate bugger!

It is widely believed that during the 19th century, Ireland’s distillers began to use the ‘e’ as a way to differentiate their whiskeys from Scotch. They were becoming more popular and were regarded as being of higher quality. Having a different spelling gave the Irish another way of distinguishing between the two styles. Marketing, in other words.

In 1888, more than 300,000 mummified cats were found in an Egyptian cemetery.
They were stripped of their wrappings and carted off to be used by farmers in England and the U.S. for fertilizer.

Isaac Newton invented the cat flap.
Newton was experimenting in a pitch-black room. Spithead, one of his cats, kept opening the door and wrecking his experiment. The cat flap kept both Newton and Spithead happy.

Not to forget Man's Best Friend!
Robert the Bruce's faithful Bloodhound Donnchadh not only affected Scottish history, but U.S. history as well. Enemies of Robert used his dog to find him in hiding but were surprised when the dog turned on them when they tried to attack his master. Because of this dog hero's intervention the men were driven off and Robert the Bruce survived to become the King of Scotland. Later on, King George III of England's dispute with the colonies in the Americas led to U.S. independence. King George III was a descendent of Robert the Bruce and would not have been in place as King without Robert's surviving years prior.

Would you like a trip to an alternative tourist attraction? In the mid-1980s, the Soviet Union built a bunker in Lithuania, and this bunker has now been turned into an 'amusement park' with the apt name Išgyvenimo Drama. Here you can for only approx. 25 dollar, will be met by guards and have their belongings taken away, including a mobile phone, after which you will be taken down to the bunker. Down here you will, among other things. be interrogated by KGB officers, learn the Soviet national anthem under threats and sent through a maze. The visit should give the tourist a realistic experience of what it was like to be a citizen of the Soviet Union, and if you make it through the trip, you will be rewarded with a voucher and vodka.

Quote:
Inęs de Castro (1323-1355) was the mistress of the Portuguese Crown Prince Peter. When the Crown Prince's wife died, Crown Prince Peter and Inęs began living together as husband and wife. They had even more children together, but King Afonso IV felt that Inęs had too much power and wanted to prevent her from getting more by becoming the Crown Prince's wife. The king therefore had Inęs killed.
When the king died in 1357 and Crown Prince Peter became Peter I, Inęs ’body was, according to legend, exhumed. Peter I then had the body crowned and had several courtiers kiss the corpse's hand as a sign of fidelity.
