Jack Nitzsche does, indeed, deserve a bit of a deep dive; the problem is where to begin; he was a major fixture in LA/Hollywood music, being involved in the orchestration, production, working as a musician in the studio,
and writing songs for some of the greatest acts ever from the 1950s til his death in 2000; he composed for films, TV, and many, many famed artists; he actually won an Academy Award ("Oscar") for best song of the year for co-writing Up Where We Belong from the movie "Officer And A Gentleman"; his list of credits is long and very, very impressive; he was arguably just as responsible for the famed Wall Of Sound as Phil Spector, since it would probably never have come to pass without Jack's touch...

He is probably most known for his collaborations with The Rolling Stones whom he met in the mid-60s and he worked with both as a group and as individuals, play on a number of their albums and assisting with the production and orchestration; one of his more interesting projects was overseeing the production of the soundtrack for Mick Jagger's film screen debut in the movie, Performance; he worked on all aspects of the finished soundtrack and played instruments on some of the tracks; the film was shot and finished in 1968, but not released until 1970, due to Warner Bros Studios being squeamish about the final film; the subject matter and the presentation was, for its time, well outside what most audiences had ewer seen and Warners held off releasing it for as long as possible; it is interesting to note the Warners executives had greenlighted the project because they thought they were getting a sort of light-hearted Rock & Roll romp of a film much like the Beatles films and hoped to score big on soundtrack album sales; man, were they ever blindsided...

The soundtrack featured, besides Jagger and Nitzsche, other talents like RY Cooder, Randy Newman, Merry Clayton, Buffy Saint-Marie, and others including a very early Rap from the famous Last Poets, pre-dating Hip-Hop by at least a decade; the featured cut was the song Memeo From Turner, sung by Jagger and featuring Ry Cooder on guitars, Randy Newman on piano, and Gene Parsons (formerly of the Byrds and The Flying Burrito Brothers) on drums; this collaboration served also as the launching point for Ry Cooder's career since Jack introduced Ry to Jagger and the Stones who, in turn, had him play on some of their tracks (Ry was actually on a very short list of guitarists being considered to replace the fired Brian Jones); there were three versions of the song recorded, with the first having Jagger on vocals and members of the band Traffic (Steve Winwood and Jim Capaldi) plus possibly Charlie Watts as the backing band; Nitzsche and Jagger liked the vocal but didn't like the band sound of the first version, so a second version was recorded with Jagger and a couple of the Stones and some other musicians doing the backing track; the second version was also panned and the third, final version was created by Nitzsche who took the Jagger vocal from the first version and had Cooder, Newman, and the others create a new backing track; the finished product is probably one of Jagger's best performances...

First version, with Traffic backing;

Second version, reportedly sabotaged by Keith Richards who was peeved at Mick for dallying with Keef's girl, Anita Pallenberg on the Performance film set...

...and, finally version three, as it appears on the film soundtrack; impressive is how Jack was able to mold the instrumental track around the vocal taken from the scrapped first version and create a track this powerful...
