In 2017, the first day of the Chinese New Year is on Saturday, 28 January, initiating the year of the Rooster. The New Year festival is centuries old and gains significance because of several myths and traditions. Traditionally, the festival was a time to honor deities as well as ancestors.

211: Septimus Severus age 64 dies: Roman Emperor from 193 to 211. He seized power after the death of Emperor Pertinax in 193 during the Year of the Five Emperors. He conquered all of Mesopotamia and made the farthest forays into England, conquering almost the entire island. Under his reign, Rome was the largest it would ever be. He strengthened Hadrian's Wall and reconquered the Southern Uplands up to the Antonine Wall, which was also enhanced. Severus then thrust north with his army across the wall into enemy territory. Retracing the steps of Agricola over a century previously, Severus rebuilt and garrisoned many abandoned Roman forts along the east coast, including Carpow which could house up to 40,000 soldiers. Severus' campaign was cut short when he fell fatally ill. He withdrew to Eboracum (present day York) and died there . Although his son Caracalla continued campaigning the following year, he soon settled for peace. The Romans never campaigned deep into Caledonia again: they soon withdrew south permanently to Hadrian's Wall. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Septimius_Severus

cool The life of Pi ...(π) : Gov'mint is often about splittin' the Pi !

1897: Bill to change the value of π is introduced:
The Indiana Pi Bill is the popular name for bill #246 of the 1897 sitting of the Indiana General Assembly, one of the most notorious attempts to establish mathematical truth by legislative fiat. Despite its name, the main result claimed by the bill is a method to square the circle, rather than to establish a certain value for the mathematical constant π, the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. However, the bill does imply various incorrect values of π, such as 3.2.
The bill never became law, due to the intervention of Professor C. A. Waldo of Purdue University, who happened to be present in the legislature on the day it went up for a vote. π= 3.2??!! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indiana_Pi_Billno! no! no! it's: Fortunately cooler heads prevailed :
Quote:
...the bill was brought up and made fun of. The Senators made bad puns about it, ridiculed it and laughed over it. The fun lasted half an hour. Senator Hubbell said that it was not meet for the Senate, which was costing the State $250 a day, to waste its time in such frivolity. $erious Pie imho He said that in reading the leading newspapers of Chicago and the East, he found that the Indiana State Legislature had laid itself open to ridicule by the action already taken on the bill. He thought consideration of such a proposition was not dignified or worthy of the Senate. He moved the indefinite postponement of the bill, and the motion carried.
Thank god for Sen Hubbel and C.A. Waldo ...and 'punnin' Joe Hill?? (4 any Utah traditional songsters reading this post)
