At my local air-to-ground range back in my youth there are three spotting towers to triangulate hits connected by wire for comms. On more than one occasion F-111s were responsible for cutting the cables whilst flying in between towers.

The Buccs and Jags knew they were there and so flew lower.

Who knew?

Little late but that dome is for radar. FLIR or forward looking infrared was not aircraft deployable until the late 60's the AC-130A was the first aircraft to carry FLIR.
