So, I decided to have one last go at it. Read the manual to make sure I got the targeting scales right and off to some test firing. Turned out not even the manual has been "tested"... good grief... no wonder I couldn't hit anything. They swapped the scales on the periscope. Not only did I score my first ever direct hit on an AT gun at 800m but I managed to have the scale read the distance too. Well I'll be damned... Even shrapnel explodes nice and orderly roughly where it's supposed to. Still, this golden turd is far from safe from deletion. I still see no viable option to leave my other units back at start while I clear the way for them... "Epic battles"... not quite.

Skybird,

Please, check the facts prior to giving advise to new players.

I think you are being again totally unfair with Steel Fury.

You say that "SF is pretty much a dead game these days."

Well...

1) A new update (mod) has been released for Steel Fury just some days ago, and the modders are planning to release an additional update probably in December:

http://graviteam.com/forum/index.php?topic=10944.0

2) A new "mission pack" has been also released just some days ago. It contains 40 new missions for Steel Fury.

http://graviteam.com/forum/index.php?topic=10934.0

3) There are a lot of additional user made missions.

http://graviteam.com/forum/index.php?topic=10102.0

A lot of the new missions developed by the modders are very good.

If you install the main mod (Steel Panzer Mod 1.5 and its updates) and the missions, you will get a very good WWII tank simulator, with a wide variety of tanks and vehicles modeled, and more than 100 new missions (including also several excellent new campaigs !!!)

Von Due: please, give it a chance, I think that you will not be dissaponted !

Skybird: it is a shame to see that when a new player comes to "Tanksim" asking for advice about "Steel Fury" he gets a completely false answer that sounds just as an advertisement for "Steel Beasts". Please, if you know nothing about "Steel Fury", do not answer questions about it. If you want to give advise about "Steel Fury", check at least the developer forums:

Von Due,

Regarding your questions, please ask them on the developer (Graviteam) Forums:

Hm. Must be the first boyscout ever in this forum.

BTW, I reviewed the game when it was released. That bad I know it. This is a link to the draft text from Autumn 2008. I see no reason to change any in that.

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=144991

You like it, okay, I understood that. But you must face the fact that there are many other people who do not like it. The game already died soon after release, when the publisher closed down, because major issues and bugs, weaknesses in AI, pathfinding and sound, were not repaired. Mission packs and new skins or models do not adress these issues and thus cannot compensate for that, at least in that player's opinion who sits at my end of the line. In Germany, it is virtually impossible to get a copy of SF - since long. So, to say the game is pretty much dead, is okay, I think. It may live a niche life somewhere, with some people. I wish them fun, and that is no sarcasm: jedem Tierchen sein Pläsierchen. But fact is in all major game forums and game sites and sim sites, the title is practically non-existent. Plus Graviteam has done some more tank games since then.

Further, you have to excuse, but I do not plan to ask you for your allowance whether or not I reply in a thread, and when I do: in what fashion. Van Due and me got along very well, and easy.

I think you just take it all way to serious.

Please also consider that none of the things you mentioned in mods you mentioned cures the critical issues that van Due was voicing all by himself. Criticism that I shared back then.

Buying Steel Fury is at least as easy as buying Steel Beasts. You can buy Steel Fury at www.gamersgate.com without any problems, for example.

Stating that a game that can be easily purchased, with a little but very active community, and that gets new mods and content released regularly is "pretty much a dead game these days" is obviously wrong. I want to think that you have stated it because you didn't know about the evolution of Steel Fury during the last years. But I also think that it is only fair to ask you to check the reality of a tank sim (at least its official forums!) prior to giving advise to a player stating that that tank sim is dead. This is the "Tanksim" forum and the players should expect fair and accurate advise about tank sims here...

Von Due,

Just a suggestion for you, but please ask your questions also on the Graviteam forums.

You can control the platoon, APCs and infantry directly under your command.

You have to press F8 to go to the map and orders screen. Then you have to click on the icon "Orders to unit" (placed on the icons panel at the top-center of the screen). Then an icons panel appears on the left-center of the screen. If you click on the icon "do as I do" your platoon will follow your movements keeping the selected formation. If you click on the icon "stop" (also at the icons panel on the left-center of the screen) then your platoon will stop while you move your tank freely. You can also click on an icon to order your platoon to go to a specific location. Please, check the tutorial missions. The third tutorial mission deals with these platoon orders...

Steel Fury is not perfect, of course, and it has its problems, but it is a very good WWII tank sim !!
