Icon7 Introducing Myself

Hello!

I am completely new here and completely new to sub simulation. I just purchased Silent Hunter 5 for Steam.

I never really planned on getting into sub simulation. I had always thought of subs as kind of scary and cramped -- which they are. However, I decided to take the plunge (no pun intended) after noticing that most naval games I found were just moving pieces around the map without huge sim elements.

So I'm spending a lot of time watching Let's Plays on Youtubes. I am also making notes for key commands to use in SH5. So far, I haven't had much success just winging it, but I am studying what players to learn. I can do basic navigation and running of the sub. I'm just learning about how to use TDC. I have yet to be able to hit a moving target ha ha. I did sneak my sub into a British port and used my deck gun to attack some merchant ships -- this was a sure way to learn how to get back out evading detection. I spent a lot of time learning how to be "less" detectable. I had to sit at depth for a bit when they were really after me.

So if you have any tips for SH5, please, share! I'm investigating mods at the moment... I just want to be able to teleport from station to station because I have a bit of lag in 1st person.

I have heard that SH5 can either be played casually or more realistically. I am hoping to achieve casual ability to understand the basic concepts and then to learn the details of U boat operations and historical accuracy. I'm big into history and would love to get to a level where things were realistic. But, Rome wasn't built in a day.

In addition to sub simming, I'm really good at Train Simulator. I haven't had much luck in Flight Simulator over the years, though.

Two of my favourite movies are sub movies -- The Hunt for Red October (I read the book as well) and Crimson Tide.

So thanks for having me, I am sure I'll learn much from you all and hope to make friends too!

Ryan
