Refresh my memory please
Hi guys
After being away from SH3 & 4 for a number of years I'm wanting to reinstall the game and play it again. I'm trying to get up to speed with mods for SH4 (incl the U-Boat addon) so I'd be grateful if a kind soul or three could set me straight. When I quit playing, there were 2 "mega-mods" that I can recall - TMO & RFB. Essentially these overhauled the game adding elements that the mod authors thought the game should have, and tweaked other aspects. These were mutually exclusive - you went with one or the other but you couldn't run both in the same install. Browsing this forum leads me to believe there are 2 other mods - GFO (which as I understand it just fixes obvious issues but pretty much leaves the game "vanilla"), and Fall of the Rising Sun (FOTRS), which was just a murmur when I left SH4. Could someone please explain what FOTRS's modding philosophy is? Then there was RSRDC which didn't overhaul the entire game but tweaked the campaign with the benefit of historical knowledge. There are separate versions for the various "mega-mods". Are my statements above correct? Have I missed anything else? I know I sound like a total noob but for all intents and purposes I am - I've forgotten a lot about this sim. Thanks. |

RSRD is now a mega mod that does much more than change the shipping in the Campaign. If you are playing TMO and also RSRD you are now playing RSRD's vision of what SH4 should be, because it changes so much of TMO's vision. Many players really enjoy the RSRD experience. TMO also has its own campaign, few people realize that it is also a stand-alone mod that is Ducimus' vision of what SH4 should be. Hope this helps.... 'variety is the spice of life' and many talented people have provided a lot of variety to choose from. There are so many more than these five 'main' mega mods: GFO, RFB, TMO, RSRD, and soon FOTRS. Happy Hunting!

Thank you.
Is there a page or pages I could go to to read up on these mods, to see what does what? I know there's a sticky but information I'm looking to get is rather sparse. |

Fall of the Rising Sun was originally released by AOTD_MadMax. At the time, I was playing SH4 v1.4, and thought it was great, other than a few little nigglies that would come out every once in a while. The mod was based on TMO v1.7, and was therefore of a similar level of "difficulty", maybe even a bit more difficult. MadMax doesn't have "Mad" in his name for nothing apparently... Anyway, when his team went to do a version for SH4 v1.5 after Ubi updated the game, they only did a German language version. I've played it, and it is beautiful looking.
Turn to today, and Rockin Robbins has gathered a few folks together and we're attempting to re-do what AOTD_MadMax had done, but with the v1.3 of his combined with the v2, translated to the English language ~AND~ have it compatible with SH4 v1.5. We're also trying to keep the "spirit" or intent of the original mod intact. Ain't been an easy thang. We've about gotten the conversion completed, and are starting to work on the Campaign level of things now. Closed beta has just started. One of the cool things of the project is building on a Rockin Robbins' vision of User moddability, where the user is in control of how tough or easy they want the mod to be. Do I want a lot of airplanes, or just a few? Super elite DD, or blind and deaf? We even have plans to implement a fanciful North Atlantic style of ASW in the Pacific, only with the IJN using it against the Fleet Boat, and see if the Fleet Boat could have succeeded in their appointed tasks, compared to what the Kriegsmarine's Uboats encountered. So basically, from mild to wild... Maybe we'll have to come up with some "Saucie" names for the difficulty plug-ins... |
