Default IS SH5 Worth Playing now?

Hi evr1
Please forgive me if I've posted in wrong thread. I just wanted to ask a general question about SH5. I have played GWX for SH3 and loved it. Is SH5 now at a point where it is more like a finished game? I mean is it comparable or better than SH3 or 4? What are the best mods and which ones are in the pipeline? thanks in advance for any help

You've posted in the right place, but you've also posted a question that gets asked over and over and over.

SH5 is playable now and has been for several years.

It all depends on what you want. If what you want is to walk around the best-represented Type VII yet made, interact with the crew and look at the best graphics available, sinking the same seven ships over and over, SH5 is great. If you want to run a Type II or Type IX in a free full-war campaign, encounter multitues of assets, including blimps, look at and sink more that 100 different merchant types, then you still have to live with SH3's "dated" graphics.

But within their contexts and limitations they are both great games. As is SH4.

Is that true even with mods??
I just saw this game was $10 so I was tempted to buy it, I felt really burned by SH4 that's why I left the series

Edit: Hey Steve, can you let me know which version to buy on your amazon link? The Gold edition is available for direct download. Is there any drm on the copy now? should i activate the game through steam after i get the product key, i want to mod my game heavily with a supermod or individual mods, not sure the best way to go.

If you didn't like SH4 you'll probably like SH5 even less. Personally I like SH4 a lot, my main objection being the lack of modding involved, especially in the U-Boat side. As I said, SH5 is geared less to running the sub than to role-playing the captain. A lot of people like it and stand by it as the best there is. My tastes tend more toward the kind of campaign offered by SH3, but then I go back to SH1 and Aces Of The Deep and Silent Service before them.

It's not exactly "my" link, but I'll try to help.

The 'Gold' edition of SH5 is nothing more than the basic game with some extra ships formerly available for purchase. I stay away from it just on principle. If it costs the same as the 'regular' version, go ahead and get it. If it costs one penny more I'd say it's not worth the money.

The DRM was removed a couple of years ago. I never use Steam for anything. As for mods, I can't help. My nine-year-old single-core 32-bit machine tried to run it for a week or so before giving up altogether.

Well I ended up buying the DVD-ROM, it's been so long since I bought physical media it's funny I'm so used to Steam now. From what I've read, modding a Steam install doesn't work with some mods so I think the DVD is the best option.

I remember SH4 not having any significant mods for a while after release, the game looked better than SH3 but the TDC drove me nuts, I was a pro at SH3 and I felt like banging my head against the wall, trying to figure out a firing solution for convoy attacks.

I think I watched a youtube video of SH5 or some news story that got me back into 'the mood' of subsimming. I'm a bit bummed that it seems like SH5 will be the last in the series but it looks like the game is being enjoyed by lots of people now that it has had time to mature with the modding community.

I've always associated you with the top brass around here

I hope, with the success of crowd-funded PC games(Star Citizen) we get our own subsim revival, maybe someone will step up and create an entirely new series based on WWII or a modern day, fictional war. These games have always been the coziest for me, they're slow and give you lots of time to stop and drink a sip of tea and look out on the horizon for a hint of smoke...man, I'm REALLY aching to get back into it but unfortunately my copy will get here sometime between the 21st and 29th according to Amazon...

That should give me time to figure out this 'modding' thing again, I've been out of the loop for so long.

Back when SH4 U-Boat Missions was released as a separate add-on, I tried to get it from Steam. Steam refused to sell it to me because I don't live in the United States. Apparently they don't deal with the Sovereign Nation of Utah. The fact is that the girl at CS was very helpful. She couldn't figure out what the problem was, but she spent a good deal of her time trying.

For obvious reasons I wouldn't know anything about that.

You have me there. I am absolutely terrible at math, especially the kind required to set up attacks like that. What I miss most from SH3 is the WE Assistance. In SH4 I just have to live with the auto-targeting.

I haven't played in a long time now. I love SH3, but my old single-core rig won't run FlakMonkey's New Interiors or IABL's Merchant Fleet Mod, and without those I just can't seem to get excited anymore, especially the MFM. I've put in so many hours adding ship names to SH3C, and most of those go with ships from the MFM.

I don't really care. I still play AOD and SH1, and I'll play SH3 and SH4 forever if I ever get a decent computer.

Well, I've gained some authority and position over the years, but the real top brass is just one guy, Neal Stevens by name. Subsim is his baby, and everybody else is just helping out.

...out of the two Hunters - 3 & 5, 3 is the most stable, because of its age and all the time love and care spent on it.

...5 is definitely on its way though...
