Default Is SH5 worth playing over SH3 yet?

I am a huge fanboy of SH3, which earned its right, and have been for over 5 years. I've been modding it for that long too. I have some questions if I should even give SH5 the time of day again. I have a couple questions that are very important to me concerning a Uboat sim, and if they are not met SH3 meets my needs just fine.

These questions can be answered concerning the stock SH5 or modded SH5, no matter.

1. What uboats can I use in SH5? I can use Type IIA, IIB, IID, VIIB, VIIC, IXB, IXC, IXD/IXD2, and XXI in SH3.

2. Can I start the war in Aug or Sept. 1939 and continue to May 5th 1945 unimpeded? I can in SH3.

3. Can I go anywhere in the world that has the ocean? I can in SH3.

4. Do I have options which flotilla I'm with and what base I leave out of? I can with SH3 and more options when its modded.

5. Can I pick my crew before patrols, give medals, and upgrade my boat? I can with SH3 modded with SH3 Commander.

TY

Pditty8811, if you haven't figured it out yet, it looks less like you're after an honest appraisal of SH5 than bragging about what SH3 can do. We've already had our spate of fanboys (admitted or not) of one game slagging the other, and it's not a good idea to start it all over again.

No, there are still a lot of things SH5 cannot do. This is because the focus was changed, and with the help of some talented and dedicated modders SH5 is very good at doing what it was meant to do, and getting better all the time.

Perhaps you honestly wanted to find out more, but if so your phrasing could have been better.

I did honestly want to find out more. And no one has answered my quesitons, so I know not what SH5 can do at this point in time.

So download some mods and install them and give SH5 a spin. Only you can determine if it's good or not. Everyone's opinion is biased in some way or another.

I personally, do not consider Silent Hunter 5 to be any good at all.....I bought the game about three months ago and tried to play it, and quit after about 10 minutes.

Tonight, I tried to play it again and tinkered around with it for a good while to give it a chance, but I'm sorry the feeling just isn't there. I originally thought walking around the submarine would be fun and really immersive, but I don't know, maybe its just me, but it doesn't feel right and if anything just feel more a chore.

The interface is all crappy and arcady and god knows what the game designers thought they were doing. Did they even bother to look at how they made SH3 & 4???

I guess its back to SH4.....but SH5 is being shelved and is among a very small pile of "forgotten" games that I have. Not two minutes ago, I finally uninstalled it from my PC, it will no longer grace my hard drive and I'm afraid I wish I hadn't bought it. In truth, I actually feel like throwing it away I'm so dissapointed.

Shame such a great series had to fall from grace so far and hard!!

I've come from SH4 and although the initial amount of modding is a bit of a nightmare, I'd say it's well worth it when it comes together. Dynamic Environment, KZS's new hull-wetness mod, MO and the new OHII Light campaign have really turned the stock SH5 into something brilliant. With TDW's UI mod you can recreate your SH3 appearance, if you wish.

Not being tied to objectives, just cruising around these beautiful oceans is well worth the time spent modding imo. Take the plunge, expect a cold shock but keep on diving

Here's a couple of snaps taken just now:

Have you thought about changing your map colors (the tools drawing lines color)? The exe patcher I made will let you select colors for the tools drawings among other things.

I have, but wasn't sure which option modified the pencil/ruler markers. I'm kinda trying not to switch on anything I don't fully understand as stuff keeps breaking.

I agree. Try SH5 (it's damn cheap now) and see how it goes. There's quite a jump from 3 to 5, particularly in the graphics department. It's also a different game from 3 or 4. For me, it was like learning SH all over again - none of the familiar controls were there and the kb controls are different. Mods help with getting a familiar interface and in other areas. SH5 was worth the learning curve.

I have no experience with SH3, but my SH5 game time is increasing all the time. Visually I think its the best of the range, and as said above there are somethings it cannot do. Myself I think the sinking mechanics are a let down, but again that's my personal opinion.

I think you should at least try it and with the Mods that are available you should be able to taylor the game to something that you enjoy.

If it wasn't for the hard work of the modders of this community the game wouldn't be where it is now and for that I say thanks

I wonder why Steve had to feed the troll. A successful troll is a successful troll and I respect them. Until post 3-5 everything was ok, but the argument clinic is really that attractive? How about me going on the SH3 forum and asking stupid question like this? Im sure that I will get banned instantly because of trolling. Same as I was once because bashing a SH3 fan :/

I kindly ask the moderators to close these kind of topics and also stop this assault on SH5. There is a lot of SH6 fans who do a LOT of things to improve/fix the game, even if is made by Ubi. We dont deserve this kind of humiliations and trolling. Thanks.
