Default Frame Rate Drop

I was attacking Truk Atoll earlier today. When I closed to within 20 miles of the main anchorage my frame rate outside dropped from the high 30's to below 10fps. At the map the frame rate was also low...around 50fps rather than 100+ like normal. I made my attack and then headed away at top speed. I thought it was just the number of ships and the proximity to land that was causing the issue but now I'm over 200 miles from Truk, on my way back to Pearl, and the fps is still staying low. If my time acceleration is tuned up the frame rate drops below 5fps at the map screen.

I'm thinking the memory is getting bogged and not being freed up even when I leave the congested area. If I leave the mission the fps does go back up but, when I load the mission back up, from a save point after the Truk attack, it starts off very low again.

Anyone else have this issue before and know a fix? The only mod I'm using is TMO with the patch.

My only suggestion would be to install more RAM. Otherwise it could be a video card issue and you may want to turn off some stuff.

Anouther thing could be having too much stuff running in the background.

I have plenty of RAM and nothing really running in the background. Volumetric Fog is turned off. Even turned down the land graphics and no change.

I've attacked other harbors, with several ships, and it doesn't do this.

This lag/fps drop is similar to what happens when I'm approaching Pearl Harbor. But unlike Pearl the fps doesn't go back up when I move away from the area. Just weird that it's only happened like this when I attack Truk.

Maybe some new type of Japanese weapon?

Just a suggestion, i had strange frame rate issues and it turned out to be the cooling fan on my graphics card had stopped running. Cleaned the dust out and the problem went away. I tried drivers, editing files and all kinds of stuff but of course it was the last thing i thought of.

I have had that problem in the past so I try keep the computer's fans and vents clean and dust free as much as possible. I appreciate the suggestion though.

I have had this same issue when approaching Truk. I found this thread while looking for a solution.

I've seen this issue reported several times. At first it sounded odd, but then it happened to me. I hadn't seen Truk mentioned in previous posts, though.

I've had a few patrols that took me to Truk, and once I get close, the game bogs down. Running at no or low time compression, up to 64x, the game runs perfectly fine, with no noticeable drop in frame rate. Once I hit 128x, the frame rate halves. 256x, half again. Running at a frame rate of 1 at 1024x back to Pearl is a pain. Save the game, exit, make sure nothing is running in the background, restart, load the game and still have the issue.

Get back to Pearl, end patrol, start a new one without exiting the game, and the game runs fine. Load a previous save, the game runs fine. Running 4096x time compression with no issues. Go sailing around, near ports, sinking ships, and no problem. Get near Truk, and boom! Any time compression above 64x drops the frame rate into single digits.
