Default Sub crew management screen

WTF goes on there . So many questions , so few answers . Just starting my first career and i have no idea about crew workings . It starts off with your damage control active and it says they are watch standing . If i deactivate them by clicking on the bottom panel tabs then it says they are maintaining . Do i put some in the guns slot to maintain guns or what ? It says in the manual Quote "Sooner or later your submarine will suffer a malfunction due to damage being taken or insufficient care by the crew ." Is this the maintenance thing .

Well your first mistake was to belive the manual. It (the manual) makes a good coaster thats about it.

The only real mistake you can make with crew management is to leave them at GQ for too long and they all pass out from exhaustion.

There is a button to put a watch crew active or inactive. The only time they really need to be active is when your seeing action.

There is a good thread in the stickys up there that explains crew management in greater detail. Ill try to find it and edit it in here.

There are three crew shifts which cycle automatically every 4 hours. You cannot change this. The crew has three basic states:
Active (on duty)
Maintenance (a more relaxed activity than Active)
Sleeping

If you tire out the crew too much the puter will put them all asleep which degrades maintenance.

Things that tire the crew:
Continuous battle
Depth charging
Low oxygen/High CO2
Bad weather
Battle Stations
Battle wounds
Not enough crew due to deaths or partial crew due to repair crew assignments.
Poor expertise in critical functions.
Poor leadership on the part of the crew lead position.

Actual battle damage is handled by the dedicated repair team at the bottom. They do NOT do the routine maintenance but are for emergency battle damage. The repair team does nothing (they are at mantenance rest or sleeping) until you activate them. They only repair items in the damage list AND the damaged components must be in areas where there are also normal ACTIVE shift crew in the compartment or maning the damaged weapon.
Repairs are not instant, and may take too long to save the boat. Repair crews that have a poor skill level may fail to repair more often than they succeed, or their repairs may be only temporary or partial. If your repair crew total skill is less than 50% you may get frustrated.

The game is designed for you to get to know your crew and carefully manage them to optimise your chances of success. The efficiency of your boat, battery, diesel range, targeting, dive/surface times, enemy detection, depth-keeping, maintenance, repair and probably many other things depend on your crew's experience, job focus, health and moral. Take good care of your crew, place them in the correct positions, update them at port and they will take care of you.

There are other things you will learn from experience not mentioned in this post. It's a rich part of the game
