Default More meanderings from a proud father buna

Anyone living near to the River Tyne will see quite a site this Sunday 3rd from approx 3.15pm onwards when the Holland America Line cruise ship Eurodam pays a 24 hour visit.

At 285 metres and almost 87,000 ton she is the biggest cruise liner to pay a visit iirc.

What is of special interest to me is the fact my 23 year old lad (just been accepted for promotion to second officer but awaiting a vacancy) will be on her as third officer.

I'll be on the Groyne on the south side of the river as she enters the harbour (any of you that are familiar with the area will know the location) taking photos and my lad (James) has made arrangements for his mam, sister and me to tour the boat on Monday with a lunch thrown in from one of the ships restaurants.

I'll put up some photos after the event.

And rightly so.

Enjoy yourselves.

His grandad would be proud, Second Officer, he'll be Captain before you know it!

Give him a pat on the back from all of us Jim, he's earned it and more!

Now, can he get her through the Thames Barrier for the Thames Pageant?

That's quite uncanny that Jamie...I was in the shower a short time ago and shed a few private tears at the very same thought.

God bless ya

Congrats to both of you!

Now, the real question: can he get you a discount on a cruise?

Apparently he is allowed a free cruise for a week per year for up to four passengers.....meals, and accomodation are free but not alcoholic drinks.

One small problem...he only gets to know a week before hand and his mom wants him to be on board if and when it happens.

I can imagine her stalking him for a week

We nearly got to Alaska two years back but the vacancy was purchased my tourists at the last minute.

Good stuff Jim. You have every right to be proud.

We get a lot of cruise ships here. Massdam was just here on Tuesday. According to schedule, Ms Eurodam arrives here, Charlottetown, Canada on Sept.20. Will try to get some photos and post them.

You know how to make one very envy, 'cause one of my biggest dream, is to take a cruise and I'm not talking about some 2-3 days cruise.

I understand that the only way to achieve this, is to get a job on a cruise-liner. That itself is very difficult.

Here's a some of those cruise I wish I could affort

Cruising the Norwegian fjords

A roundtrip Southampton-New York-Southampton(Only Cunard makes this)

World Cruise

So I'm very envy at your son, on the other hand a job on a cruiser can be very hard at times. Even thou most of the crew must love their job(I'm convinced that they do)
