Figure I might as well mention this game.
Essentially it's Terraria(2D minecraft) in space. You have a space station and you can travel to planets throughout the Universe. However, the game procedurally generates everything. Each planet will have it's own weather, gravity, trees, etc. Guns will be generated much like Borderlands, where each gun you find will have it's own look and random stats(plus modifiers). Armors will follow the same suit. Finally, there will be about 50 pre-made monsters, while all of the others will be randomly generated. The system gives them a head, body, limbs and color. Then it decides whether or not to give them wings, and chooses if they are passive or aggressive. Edit: The latest estimate is that there is roughly a thousand possible monster combinations, not including color variations. On top of having your own space station, you can claim planets as a Homeworld. Once you do so you have complete control of the planet, you can terraform it, change the weather(requires a special building), extinct certain species and also limit what other players can do(whether or not they can use explosives, build, etc.). While it's possible to have multiple homeworlds, the Dev's say it'll be hard for one player to do, however multiple players could form an Empire of planets. There will be 6 playable races, the three that have been revealed so far have been Humans, Apex(Think Planet of the Apes), and the Avians. One of the neater functions is Director Mode, in which one person takes the role of the 'Director', much like a game keeper in D&D. The person in this role can spawn people, items, monsters, etc. See here for an example: http://community.playstarbound.com/i...tor-mode.5522/ Some more information: Apex Race Avian Race Procedurally generated guns Forest Biome Video Biomes Lighting Demo Water Demo - Note the first, and last two water canisters are under pressure, which is why they fill so much. As of right now, applying pressure to water may only be possible using Dev methods. Shields Randomly Generated Monsters Announced Features List

They haven't announced a release date yet, however, given the latest screens, it looks like it may be soon.
Edit: Clarification, the original release date was Summer 2012, however Tiy(main development dude), has said the current release date will be sometime before 2012 is out.

Considering all the great adventure maps out there, it'll be highly interesting to see what the "director mode" can do for this game.

I think Director Mode will be a lot like Sleep is Death.
Although you are right that it would be interesting to see what people can do with it. Essentially it would be like playing D&D or any other board game with a Game Keeper. It adds almost infinite possibility to the game, as long as you have someone with an imagination as your director, you could get hundreds of "story lines". You could even re-enact you're favorite movies.
