CAPTAIN, Do you REALLY know your boat?

Thanks for clicking-in this post. Now that I've got your attention, I wanted to ask how well you know your present command? What was the real Captain's name? How many War Patrols did your boat see? Where did she first slide down the ways? What was her Fate?

Here's a little gift I learned from Flying Long Haul in Flightsim: slow down the Accelerated Time and read the Aircrafts' (PMDG) manual.

Next time you are crossing the Pacific, far from harm with lots of Ocean between point A and point B, why not slow down the accelerated time a few notches, do a perusal on Wikipedia or Google your boat.

Read-up on the history and service she saw:
  • Look at photos of your boat, how many conversions did she see?
  • Look at photos of the Officers and Crew (how many Seadogs or cats were on board)
  • Read the Patrol Logs.
  • Also a good read while at sea: The Silent Service in World War II: The Fleet Type Submarine (manual)
I assure you it will be a rewarding experience that makes your War Patrols even more memorable as you relive a part of history while listening to War Time Radio (see Captain Cox's: Captain Midnight Mod) as your Diesels glide you through the Sea.

Calm Seas and thanks for reading

I always do this. I consider it a bad luck sign if I get a boat that was lost during the war!

Default What a great thread

Here I am in the Balao. Wanted the Kraken, the that's what I got. No arguing with Lockwood, he loves being in charge and wouldn't listen anyway. I read your post and blew it off. What a lousy idea. I'm busy trying to find Jap merchies here. A waste of time.

But I play Trigger Maru and the merchies aren't exactly as thick as flies like the stock game, so I absent-mindedly start following those links there......

Three hours later!!!!!!!!
Yup, you're right. Wow. I never realized I could learn so much in such a short period of time. I'll be a lot more careful with this sub now. She has to last into the 1960's and be sold to the Argentinian navy! So especially if you're not inclined to do it, do the research. The game means so much more to you after you do.

AMEN Rockin Robbins!!! Thanks very much for your post.

Knowing the History really brings home the meaning of 'getting your crew and boat home safe' ...instead of just another game over, insert new quarter 'to try again' experience.

Cheers!

ACK!!!

I have three patrols in the USS Grunion. HOWEVER, the real USS Grunion never returned from her first patrol!!!

She was commisioned in April of 1942 and presumed lost in July of 1942!!! What terrible luck.

My luck is much better thankfully. I even survived one of those nasty harbor photo recon missions!!!

Default Boats that were sunk

When I get a boat that was really sunk in the war, I feel like I have an obligation to give them a better fate. I enjoyed my cruises in the Grunion just because I could "rewrite history."

Every now and then I come across a sub that I will check up on. Currently the USS Seal is my command. I just got finished with S-38 after 4 patrols. I was awarded the Seal in 42' out of Brisbane. I found that the USS Seal never went to Brisbane and If I remember correctly she was not ready for war until 43'. Makes no difference as I stopped to learn something new about a long lost boat that helped win a war.

Whoops!

I'm Capt'n of a new career and they gave me a boat with the name of U.S.S. Tarpon. The game claims it's a Porpoise ... but in reality ... it was a shark?

Yes, but according to Valor At Sea, the specs on a Shark class and a P-class are identical.

http://www.valoratsea.com/pclass.htm

I'm sure someone out there can tell you the true differences. Probably pretty minor.
