Navigation Tutorial Help

Hi -I've been playing through the Navigation Tutorial, but have a problem.

If I set a course to sail through the small strait to the SSE and follow this course, I enter the strait and complete the first task, but when I exit the strait, the second task never completes!

I've tried this multiple times and have waited until I've sailed further (once as far as the North Sea!), but the second task still won't complete.

What am I doing wrong? Don't to just need to pass through the first small strait to the SSE?

Also - where are you meant to perform the dive maneuvers and how do you find out your current depth under keel?

That's interesting. Are you reading the requirements carefully? Everything you need to do and how to do it are explained in the messages they send. They not only tell you to dive to 25 meters but tell you to click on the Shallow Depth Gauge to get there.

They also send you a radio message every time they want you to do something.

To get Depth Under Keel click on the Navigator icon and then click on the side-view of the sub with what looks like a measuring bar under it.

Thanks, but I never seem to get a radio message apart from the first one telling me I've completed task 1.

Task 2 always stays incomplete, despite passing through the strait :-(

This thread suggests this, which I guess I could try:
For example, during the first mission, you'll need to travel into a narrow channel....so just look around for a narrow place, and head into that direction, ahead-standard.
You'll also see a few small vessels, which are "monitoring your progress"....they also give you a clue about where to go.
Then use your binoculars (B-key), to spot a ship far ahead....when you reach it, you'll get your next order, etc.

Okay,I tried this, I'm still not able to complete the second order, even when I reach the big ship (looks like a cruiser or something). Any suggestions?

I use the compass to set course 250 and go to standard speed. The message to go to full speed and dive should come within a couple of minutes. Do you have the three Schnellboote pass you in the channel? Do you see the fourth schnellboot come from the opposite direction and pass you on the port side?

It sounds to me like something might be wrong with your install.

Yes I sea the Schnellboote pass. The only thing I have installed is the 1.6 patch.

I'll try on a completely stock install

Still no joy on a fresh stock install, I can complete all the missions except the second one, I only get 2 radio messages, the first one to steer through the channel (I followed a bearing of 157 degrees on the compass, basically following the torpedo boats), and the second one to go to periscope depth, but that's all.

Seems impossible to complete the second mission, I don't know what to do!

The Navigation course should be the first mission. What do you have listed as 'First'?

I'll have to check the wording when I get home, but the first task on the Navigation Tutorrial I think was entering the strait (which I can complete), the second task is passing through the strait (which never completes, even well after I've passed through it), then there's a task to go to periscope depth (which I can complete) and then to 25 metres (which I can also complete)

I believe you mean 150, not 250. Speed should also be Ahead Full at this point.

On diving to periscope depth, make your speed Ahead Flank as per the message.

You'll get a message telling you to keep course and depth.

Next message tells you to head South and go to 25 Meters.
Maintain this new course and depth.

A message pops up on screen that you have completed the objectives when you surface.

Wait for the radio message ordering you to Surface!

Once you surface you are good to go.

Okay, thanks everyone,I managed to complete the second task this time, I didn't go to full speed before, as think I missed the radio message telling me to do that!

I managed to complete the exam! Onto the next tutorial!

BTW should I be using SH3 commander even for the tutorials? Or only when I start a new career?

You said "Mission". I assumed you meant "Course" or "Class". You meant the next task. I misunderstood.

I believe you are correct.

I described what I do out of habit. I set the course and go to standard as opposed to just sitting there.
