Default Debris Out the Tubes

Hi Guys (and any gals out there),

I am wondering about a possible mod for either SH3 stock and/or GWX that I have looked for on the forums but have, if it already exists, missed.
I read somewhere that a trick used sometimes by sub captains when they were being depth charged was to take a bunch of oil, rags, maybe old foodstuffs and any other junk they had on on hand that would float up to the surface and blow it out a torpedo tube with the intention of possibly fooling the enemy on the surface into thinking they had been killed and thereby calling off the attack. Any thoughts? Anyone know more about this subject? If there isn't a mod to simulate this, I am suggesting one. I have no idea how doable it would be.

You could use that trick in Silent Service II. I can't remember if it's ever been included in any of the Silent Hunter games.

All of the SHx series allow the use of decoys, which are just a formalized version of the old "Stuff Bernard in Tube 1" trick. Not all subs carry decoys, and not in all years of the war. They weren't around in '39, and the USN didn't have any in '41. But late-war, everybody had a version.

I know about BOLD and towed decoys, but I was thinking of something a Kaleun might blow out the tubes before those innovations came on the scene. I understand the hunters on the surface weren't always fooled by it. Also, this just occurred to me. Wasn't there a limitation to the depth (because of pressure) that they could open the torp doors?

U-571 a movie? I'll have to see if I can hunt that one down. Don't believe I've seen it.

^ Don't bother. Bon Jovi on a U-Boot.

As accurate as a floating Brick-

This movie is rather a meme 'round here. You'll find 'Operation Pettycoat' to be a better Submarine movie

Not to be a smart*ss, but if you make a brick out of pumice stone, it will float.

Sorry, Mein Herr, but I couldn't resist that one.

Speaking of bad submarine movies, I watched "Hitler's Last U-Boat" the other night. In one scene the Kaleun makes a torp attack (successfully) on a closing Brit ship that has a ridiculous AOB. The movie is german. One would hope THEY would at least try to get things accurate, but no dice. The two Japanese on board commited suicide with poison rather than using their short swords (which both had with them). I don't think anyone will ever make a sub movie that competes with Das Boot.

Since we are splitting hairs:

From http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/brick

brick noun, often attributive \ˈbrik\ : a small, hard block of baked clay that is used to build structures (such as houses) and sometimes to make streets, paths, etc.

From http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/brick

brick [brik] noun 1.a block of clay hardened by drying in the sun or burning in a kiln, and used for building, paving, etc.: traditionally, in the U.S., a rectangle 2.25 × 3.75 × 8 inches (5.7 × 9.5 × 20.3 cm), red, brown, or yellow in color.
2. such blocks collectively.
3. the material of which such blocks are made.

From http://www.thefreedictionary.com/brick

brick (brĭk) n. 1. pl. bricks or brick A molded rectangular block of clay baked by the sun or in a kiln until hard and used as a building and paving material

You might make it out of pumice and it would float. It might be the size and shape of a brick, but by the most common definition, it wouldn't be a brick. There are, of course, other definitions for "brick", including a kg of plant material, but the primary definition seems to involve baked or dried clay.

It was a dirty job, but somebody had to do it.

Touché, mon Capitain.

So it sounds like there is no debris trick mod out there.
