Renown? Boring! Experience points better
I'd really like to see the renown thing changed, it isn't realistic as I think any updates in technology would be given to you anyway. Experience points for crew is a far better idea. It would really give you the feeling of getting to know your crew. In SH3 I actually changed crew on what they wore and how they looked even though the choice of characters was limited. You could start off your campaign with an inexperienced crew and add experience points based on the jobs they perform, as in making sure you got in some surface action to improve deck gun firing time and accuracy. Even your stats and exp points could make you better in different areas as Captain . I think it would really add to the immersion and you would feel the loss of crew members or see them develop and get better at their skills.
These points could be added in port when they recieve their promotions and medals. |

i could be wrong but i believe the devs said the system of renown was not being used in sh5 and upgrades and advancements werent "purchased" anymore and they were going to be awarded for your record of performance.
now dont go too quickly because maybe i got confused by who said it but im pretty sure a dev said something to the effect that they are doing what you are asking for |

If I see any mention of "experience points" or "unlockable achievements" then I will throw the disc out the window and write off the Silent Hunter series as a simulation forever.

however some crew individuality would be very good, so that the crewmembers doesent become the faceless robots that they were, especially in SH4

From reading this thread, i can see it now.......
Equipment being unlocked by going up in rank, which is dependant on experience earned. Ye olde "Level" concept yielding new abilities. DING! Oh wait, they already did that with SH4: UBM. |

SH5 isn't going to be called Silent Hunter 5, it will be World Of Silent Hunter. And everyone will call it WOoSH. Much to mookies dismay.

I don't mind the concept of the crew rising in experience, as long as it doesn't actually say "Ivor Krauss has 232 EP." Having the crew do their job better as they gain experience is only natural. On the other hand, they shouldn't be able to do the impossible. Having an engine room filled with the best technicians available still wouldn't make a Type VII uboat go 22 knots.
Not true at all. Once new items became readily available they did indeed go to the boats that were in port, but when they were brand new and there were only one or two available, those one or two went to the captains known to perform well. That is the reason for the renown system, and the reason why it is indeed historical, at least in part.

Ace of the deep .

The devs seem to be silent hunter fans as well LOL . As if they would make SH5 into something like that . They would probably takesome of this thread as a personal insult .

Wait for the first time SH5 refers to a convoy intercept as a "quest"
