Default Just discovered Hearts of Iron...

I LOVE THIS!!!! I got the HoI3 demo and have been playing it. I'm going to get the HoI3 Collection sometime within the next while. Hearts of Iron 2 also looks good. I like that it can go from 1933 to 1964 with expansions. I might get that too. There's a pack on amazon that has HoI2+Expansions with HoI1 for a lot less.

Should I go for the HoI 1-2 pack or pay another 10$ for HoI3 Collection?

Depends, if you want to do extremely long campaigns (past 1948) you can tweak HOI2. To my knowledge this isnt feasible in HOI3 though I might be wrong.

However, with the mods and DLC available (Their Finest Hour, Dies Irae Gotterdamerung, Stars & Stripes, etc), as well as a more customized experience with brigade building, On top of that, you've got the multiplayer aspect of HOI3 which is also nice.

All in all, HOI3 is a very viable buy. As I've no experience HOI I can't exactly comment. If you really really want to run the HOI2 engine, I'd actually recommend arsenal of democracy and darkest hour or something along those lines, I can't really remember the name atm sorry.

If you've got any questions I'd be happy to answer them or offer advice. Have fun!

I would love to do those long campaigns that start in '33 and end in '64. I think I'm going to get the first two in the pack for less and get the HoI3 Collection later. I have the HoI3 demo atm and I haven't finished 2 weeks of game time. It's hard to believe that there exists a game so complex. It's better to start at the bottom and work your way up I think. I'm sure that once I get HoI1, 2 or 3, I'll have loads of questions for you.

Right now, I'd be happy with General Hints/Strategies/Tactics/Help for starting as Germany on Sept. 1st, 1939.

Hearts of Iron 2's more extended timeline (which is 1936-1964, BTW) isn't really that meaningful. There are a handful of more technologies for the post-war time period, but there aren't any real events and it's mostly there for the surviving alliances to have a chance to try to kill each other after they've won the war. Also, you can quite easily extend Hearts of Iron 3's timeline with some simple modding; I haven't checked, but I wouldn't be surprised if there are mods released that do that as well as add more post-war technologies and events.

If you're looking for a real post-WWII game then East vs. West is supposed to come out this year and looks fairly awesome.

In any case, if you want Hearts of Iron 2 I'd skip the original game altogether in favour of getting Darkest Hour (well, or Arsenal of Democracy, but I haven't played that), as it is in many ways better, should be compatible with most mods and even has a World War I scenario. Also, it's only something like $10 on Steam and GamersGate.

Regarding hints, strategies, etc. look in Paradoxian wiki and AARs at Paradox forums.

Not that I know of. Mostly if you play a minor expect to get your butt handed to you. The game is balanced for majors only IMO.

Also, in regards to "Cold War' game time, it really isn't worth it as Raptor mentioned. The techs, events and scripts dont extend past 1945 thus the only option left is to just throw everything at each other. Not my cup of tea after having played 9 years of war and diplomacy...

Personally HOI3 is the best game in my opinion. It takes care of a lot of HOI2s downfalls and with mods and DLCs isnt as buggy as on release.
