Searching the Archives

How does this work? I have been looking for information regarding promotions in SH3 and the search function comes back empty.

Also, I assume Google is indexing the search for you, as this is the window which opens to tell me there are no entries for this keyword, which I find hard to believe.

So, what is the proceedure when wanting to find archived information?

One way is through Google.

www.google.com
In the search field you write:
"site:http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/archive/index.php/" (without quotation marks)
After you've entered the above mention entry you press space once and the write the word you would like google to search for. It automatically narrows down the search to the Subsim archives.

Ex:
"Search:site:http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/archive/index.php/ promotions"

Result:http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...=Google+Search

I believe that this site should have a robust search facility for the archives-NOT GOOGLE.

I assume you are referring to THIS forum, and not the archives of previous forums, right ?

What search phrase did you use ?

Remember that many common words and words that are too short (4 characters is the minimum) are ignored by the search engine.

When I just searched the Silent Hunter III forums for "promotions" I located 240 posts that contained that word.

I re-read the original post and I think he is refering to the archives of the old phpbb forum.

The original phpbb searchengine is not real good and puts a real strain on the server, that is why it is disabled in the phpbb archives. So I think you will never see a real good searchengine for the SubSim phpbb archives. Unless some one will be paying Neal for all the additional costs.

Ah, yes, forgot about that. But do they really contain threads that are not listed in the active forums ?

Thanks Guys!

I was looking for a post which I knew existed but to which I couldn't recall the specifics, this was in the SH3 Mods forum and had since been archived because it was older than Nov 2005.

The Google way of doing things worked for me.

Thank You.

Things have somewhat changed with the Google approach to searching the Archives & I would like a little guidance.

It seems that now if I use the above URL + Search String that I just get a complete listing of the topics/threads that have been archived. How do I search these?

Example - http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/archive/index.php/ scene.dat
