The flag involves the sub's dat files, which we haven't noodled with yet. As for renown, you're supposed to earn it. Like a job, you do well, they pay you money. Every enemy ship you sink earns you renown. Every completed mission objective earns you renown. If you are given a "Sink" mission, where you are instructed to "proceed immediately to the designated area and standby for further instructions", that is usually worth 100 points upon completion. You then would usually be instructed to sink tonnage, which you can do anywhere you can drive you boat to, and that objective, being comleted would be worth another 100-350 points each, plus whatever the ships themselves are worth, like 200-1200 more renown.
