That's probably what it is then. When putting planes in, the game "defaults" to setting them too slow, such as 98 knots for a bomber that has a cruising speed of 130 knots. While it's fast enough to fly, it's barely above stall speed for the game. Couple that with planes grouped too close together with their 'collision avoidance' kicking in, along with a low CrewRating, and planes will fall out of the sky.
