I'd say probably more than the Type XXI did, other than hull strength. The motors and the batteries, wow... And yes, from the Allies perspective, definitely a good thing that there was mismanagement in high places on all points of the compass for the Axis. The radio comms is what really makes me wonder "what were they thinking?"... Both Japan and Germany used land-based hf/df, why would they not think it could be used against themselves? But just imagine yourself as a DD skipper, able to do maybe 32-34 knots full-on. You find yourself a sonar contact and head for it, expecting maybe a 3 knot movement out of them... and they're gone. OK, must have done a quiet ahead flank... You re-acquire... and they're gone. Now you've got 'em again, and the sonar man says "... speed, approximately 20 knots, sir!" Is it a whale? Can they go that fast?...
