AI U-boats (Wolfpacks) - Can they join me in combat?

Hello,

I've been playing SH3 with GWX and WAC5 for some time, but I don't know exactly if AI Subs are implemented in these mods to join a player during campaign to combat the convoys. For example, you spot a convoy, send a report message and you are ordered to wait for other subs to join you.

The GWX manual talks about the AI sub type XXIII as a new added feature, in WAC5 I simply don't know.
Even if there are AI subs, do they have any 'Wolfpack' behavior, that is: Can they support the player by attacking a spotted convoy?

Are there other mods that will do that in SH3 and compatible with GWX or WAC5?
Thanks for a feedback!

I know that adding H.sie patch to GWX will bring Wolf Pack in its options.

For WAC i think it’s implemented, but at a given date...or is it in SH5? I forgot

Thanks very much, Fifi, I will take a look at the H.sie patch.

Yes, in SH5 there are indeed wolfpacks and you can do the scenario I tell above by reporting convoys. I have never been in that situation however, so I dont' know how Wolfpacks play in SH5.

For GWX get the Stiebler add-on for GWX 3. It has all the needed file modding done already.
Sorry, don't have a link for it though. But it's labeled GWX_Stiebler4B_Addon_for_V16B1.
Think I got it from his folder at markman's site, not sure.

Very interesting, John, thanks very much. That's more I have hoped for:yeah:

Happy times in Subsim!

To be clear, you would still use Hsie's patch, with this on top of that. It also provides every other option of his (Stiebler's) patch for GWX without all the editing mentioned in his instructions.
And the needed wolfpack files that need editing mentioned in Hsie's instructions, have already been done by Stiebler and placed in his patch.

Thanks for these details, I will take note of all this for later usage. It's wonderful that such a mod exists.

No problem. When you get around to it for GWX, proceed as follows:

1. Make a folder anywhere and extract Hsie's patch to it. In this new folder, extract the "Supplement" folder you'll see into the new Hsie folder you just made. In other words, everything Hsie stays in this new folder. Do the same with the O2 folder.

2. Do the same with Stiebler's patch except there are no extra folders in it to extract like Hsie's above.

3. Copy the sh3.exe file from your GWX install and paste it in the Hsie folder made in step 1.

4. Patch the .exe file with Hsie's patch. DO NOT run the option selector in the Hsie folder. Only patch the .exe with his patch.

5. Copy this newly Hsie patched .exe file into the Stiebler folder you made above if you want his options. Technically, his patch options are not needed for wolf packs, but the GWX patch folder I mentioned is nice because all the editing work is done.

6. Patch the .exe with Stiebler's patch if you want his options.

7. Place both the Supplement and O2 folders from Hsie's folder into your GWX mods folder. There should be no exe file in either.

8. Do the same with the GWX Stiebler folder. You do not need the "add-on" folder from his patch folder in this GWX case.

9. With the patched sh3.exe file still in the Stiebler patch folder, run the Options Selector there.

10. Choose what Hsie and Stiebler options you want and apply them.

11. Now your .exe has been hardcode patched with both Hsie and Stiebler's patches.
Copy this exe file into the GWX Stiebler folder you placed in your GWX mods.

12. Apply Hsie's supplement folder via JSGME.

13. Apply the GWX Stiebler folder via JSGME.

14. Apply the Hsie O2 folder via JSGME last.

14. Done.

These three should be the last mods applied in your JSGME, to keep things simple.
They first two contain *_menu.txt, command ,*.ini files, etc. that will overwrite everything before them, while the 02 folder overwrites the Hsie/Stiebler folders.
With so many mods using edits of the menu, command, etc. files, if this patches interfere with some other mod you want, some file editing would have to be done to make them all work together.

You can have wolf packs in GWX without the Stiebler folder and patch, but then you must edit the needed files manually.
It's not hard, but if you don't want Stiebler's patch options that is what you will have to do.
I like his options myself, but up to you.

Hope this make sense. It's easier to do it then type how to do it, so hopefully I didn't screw up the directions.

Can this be done mid-career or would I have to start a new one?

I'd start a new one. A lot of of files are affected by the patches. Couple other notes:

- Steibler also made a weather fix file. Worth using. Apply it after these two patches. It's #10 here. http://www.subsim.com/mods1/nygm/

- In the Options Selector Screen, be sure to choose both wolfpack options; makes them assemble (if available) sooner.

Also, fwiw, the NYGM mod already has all these features in it.

Okay, thanks!

Good hunting !

p.s. for anyone's info, NYGM has convoys that have ai wolfpack subs scripted into them. In other words, even if you don't use the Hsie/Stiebler patches, the base NYGM mod has this.
They're not activated unless you run across those convoys and there are a LOT of convoys, but fyi anyway.http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/show...66&postcount=4

Here's where I got the GWX Stiebler JSGME folder. Look in his folder at the site mentioned in this post: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/show...&postcount=396
