Oil Canning
I've been trying to do my homework on building a VIIC, and have been reading up on the frame structure of this u-boat.
I've managed to ascertain that the interval of frames on both the hull and saddle tanks were equally spaced apart. Ok thats that sorted. However here's my next dilemma The majority of photos of model builds I have seen, indicate that the oil canning effect on the saddle tank was two (+)frames apart. Unless my eyesight is really bad photos of the saddle tanks of the U-555 seem to indicate that they were one width apart in line with the skeletal structure Can anyone shed light on why we have these differences and tell me which is correct? Please help stop me from going mad and allow me to start building my u-boat!!!!! |
Use your modeler's perogative, I always build my models thinking about what I want to come out of it. if you want historical, use the U-555 pics as refrence. But make sure you aren't looking at pictures of JUST the U-555. Look at outher boats and see if there is a same pattern. Because between kiel and germania and krupp, who knows what kind of difference there was betwen the boats.

Siara,
Just outsanding work. I only hope I can do as well with my 7ft VIIC! I'll be using your great pictures and work as reference. Steve |
Thanks for your comments guys! I really appreciate it.
I came upon the stumbling block with the isolators, and Wink- the guy who tried to cast`em in resin can not do it, due to small size. The resin will not flow into cavities freely. I need to design something new. Another problem is- ive been busy with my latest project- the SF Kettenwagen. Once i calm my skin down a bit i will return to the shipyard. You can watch the progress on my new blog: http://mastermodels.blogspot.com/ It will be my main blog from now on, and i will post all my current work there, aswell as the links to old projects. Hope you like it. Best Siara |
Just to update you all on whats been going on in the works:

After months of trial, and error it become clear that casting insulators in resin is just impossible. Their small size is a big problem in the resin flow, and in keeping the bubbles away.
Instead i contacted the guy in Poland called Wojtek Fajga, and we decided to photo etch the insulators on the brass sheet. Hopefully soon i will be making some progress. Stay tuned....:DL BTW: Im still working on the Ketenwagen project, and is turning out prety nice. You can follow the build here: http://mastermodels.blogspot.com/ Hope you like my latest work. |
Great stuff on the Kettenwagen, ... esp love that folding top.

AMAZING
I can think of this beeing in a show or something and winning:cool:

I just received the email from Wojtek regarding the photo- etched insulators, and they are done!
He has sent the insulators today, and showed me the picture of the test fitting: http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/8929/pesiara2.jpg The spaces between the line grooves will be filled with Magic Sculp, or Green Stuff. You like? ;) |
 on the insulators!

Insulators have arrived, These babies are small!
http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/8562/img2589u.jpg Wojtek produced couple of designs. One aesier than the other. I will assemble one of each, and decide which to use.:salute: |
